Stress Relief and Cancer

Stress Relief Is Essential in Cancer Care
StressCancer is a disease that has caused much pain and has made us victims in one way or the other. The moment a person receives a news that he has cancer, fear become his uninvited companion as no one is ever sure of surviving the disease even with availability of many alternative cancer treatments in the hospitals. Researchers have done lots of work to ease this feeling but history knows that very many people have lost their lives to the disease. Some of the people who lost their lives did not die because of the disease itself but because the treatment was not holistic enough to suppress all the tension that the patient had. Cancer treatment is not just about injecting the patient with drugs that are aimed at killing the cancer cells. This approach of cancer treatment may not succeed because a cancer patient goes through lots of psychological trauma that needs to be addressed as well during the treatment and this is the reason why having an integrative cancer doctor attend to your cancer patient can be very beneficial as they focus on the whole person healing that is the body, the spirit and the mind. Stress is a culprit in cancer treatment and so needs to be addressed well for the cancer treatment to be effective. The patient needs to obtain a peace of mind for the drugs to have effect on the patient. Stress has been mentioned by many researchers as a factor that may make cancer treatment even more complicated.

Stress causes cancer

Many medical research findings have linked stress to cancer. Researchers have found that a gene ATF3 is a crucial link between cancer and stress. The gene is activated during stressful conditions in all types of cells, in normal conditions the gene can protect the body since incase of dangerous stressors; the normal cells can commit suicide to avoid the spread of the poison to other cells.

The researchers however proved that the cancerous cells will coax the immune system that have been put in place closer to the tumors to influence the expression of the ATF3 gene hence makes the ATF3 to inhibit the activity of immune cells making them to act erratically and allow the cancer cells to spread from the tumor to other parts of the body. In that manner stress is linked to metastasis.

It is highly recommended for a cancer patient to engage in practices that helps in reducing the stress levels in the body which in a broader way will help in reducing your risk of getting cancer. The patient ought to be well taken care of by avoiding all stressful conditions.

Stress relief is not only important to those who are already sick of cancer, stress relief is necessary for those who are not sick as well. This is because stress may make a person to involve in unhealthy behaviors like smoking, drinking alcohol and having multiple sexual partners all in a bit to find relief. Smoking tobacco is a major cause of lung cancer while having multiple sexual partners is known to cause cervical cancer.

How to relieve stress in a cancer patient

To relieve stress we need something that may distract the patient from his streams of hopeless thoughts. There are a number of activities that may help a patient be relieved of stress but still the person’s attitude towards the activity will matter so it is important to incorporate the patient’s likes and feelings in every strategy towards stress relief.

Reflexology

Reflexology involves the practice of massaging or applying pressure to various acupressure points on the body with the goal of reducing stress and supporting overall health. This however needs to be done by a qualified integrative cancer doctor in order to reap the desired benefits.

Sound therapy CD

Sound therapy is effective in stress relief in cancer patients. It involves the patient listening to the vibrations from the harmonics overtones of the 5th interval and the 7h cord which is made up of two 5th intervals. The vibrations are said to promote healing in the parts of brains that are responsible for endorphin release by causing a pathetic resonance to these parts. Endorphins are brain chemicals that transmit signals from one neuron to the other and help in reducing stress and enhancing the immune system.

Ballroom dance

Exercise is a great way that helps in stress reduction not only to cancer patient but also to people who dot have cancer cells in them. However for a cancer patient, he may not be having strength enough for a gym workout needless to mention the exercise they need to do is one that is fun like ballroom dancing which increases the blood circulation and reduces muscle tension. It also activates hormonal activities which is key in cancer treatment.

Valid company

StressStress can be worse if the patient is kept in isolation where he does not meet his family and share his moments with them. This explains why patients undergoing home treatment may recover within a short time. Keeping the cancer patients accompanied at all times reduces their stress as they know they have people they can count on.

Obesity has been linked to many diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure among other dreaded diseases. Obesity causes cancer mainly by influencing the actions of hormones as well as their levels. When the, levels of hormones are affected, the situation beckons hormonal imbalance which is the mother of all cancers in both men and women. In women breast cancer is one type of cancer that has hit headlines for the many lives it claims every year. It is also the most type of cancer caused by hormonal imbalance.

Obesity influences the levels of vital hormones such as the estrogen as well as insulin.

Normally the hormone estrogen is produced in the ovaries of a woman. When women hit menopause the production of estrogen at the ovary stops. This therefore allows for alternative sources of hormone estrogen from the excess body fats. The more the fats the higher the levels of hormone in the body there ought to be a balance between the estrogen hormone and the testosterone hormone. In case of obesity the estrogen hormone becomes dominant leading high cancer risks. Excess body fats also lower the sex hormone binding globule which gets rid of excess hormone estrogen.

Obesity will also increase the levels of the insulin hormone. Insulin is the hormone that transports glucose in the bloodstream. The cancer cells are more receptive to glucose than the healthy body cells, with high levels of insulin they get reliable source of glucose which provides them with energy to survive longer.

Exercise is a good way of keeping bodily organs active, it strengthens the body muscles, improves flexibility, improves body posture as well as strengthens the heart. It is also a good way to excrete through sweating clearing the blood vessels of clogs and improving air as well as nutrient supply in the body.

Vigorous exercise helps in breaking down excess fats and cholesterols to release energy, therefore is a good way to get rid of excess fats and maintain an ideal weight that is free from many diseases associated with excess fats in the body, cancer included.

Nutrition plays a vital part in the fight to free you from cancer. If you eat right you will be free from cancer but if you error in the choice of foods to eat you may suffer the consequences. Eating right healthy foods that are nutritious can help you a great deal.

Processed foods are not very good and so should be limited, they lack fiber that is critical as a meal component as they help in cleansing the body.

Low fat foods are also good in the diet, however dairy products that are high in fat content should be avoided.

Doctors recommend that you eat lots of vegetables and fruits as they are rich in anti cancer properties. Relapse prevention and healthy nutrition-what is relapse

Relapse is the deterioration in someone’s state of health after a temporary improvement. However, in the context of addictive behaviors, a relapse occurs when the addict resumes his or her addictive behavior after a period of abstinence. For people trying to control their behavior rather than trying to quit entirely, a relapse is a period of uncontrolled behavior. For example, for someone trying to control their drinking, a relapse could result in a session of binge drinking. For a shopaholic who is trying to follow a spending plan, a relapse could be going on a shopping spree.

Relapse prevention and healthy nutrition-Relapse Prevention

The way to prevent a relapse is to recognize and deal with some of the things that could get in the way of recovery. If you learn how to overcome these challenges, you will be more likely to keep up the changes you’ve made during treatment. There are several things that a person can do to prevent relapse. Below are some strategies that you may find helpful: Develop a support system – and use it! It is very important to surround yourself with people who love, support and encourage you. These people can be members of your family, your friends, or your care providers. They will be there to help you when you are struggling with a difficult situation or experience. It’s not always easy to reach out, but you should feel comfortable asking for help when you need it. Some people find it useful to make a list of names and phone numbers to call if they start to slip back into old thought patterns or unhealthy eating behaviors. Reduce negative influences Try to get rid of any negative influences in your life. That includes people who make you feel bad about yourself or who constantly obsess about their own weight and appearance. Your own thoughts can also be a bad influence. Learn to question any destructive thoughts you have about yourself. Make a list of all of your good qualities and use it when you feel critical or pessimistic. Identify your “triggers” A “trigger” is anything that can cause you to return to disordered eating or thoughts about disordered eating. Each person has their own triggers. They can include feeling stressed, anxious, depressed or lonely. Sometimes a traumatic experience, such as the death of a loved one can be a trigger. Some people are more likely to relapse at certain times of the year, such as during holidays or exams. To identify your triggers, think of times when you were tempted to relapse. Try to figure out what made you feel that way. Make a personal coping plan Make a list of different triggers that could cause you to relapse. Then, come up with a plan for dealing with each of these triggers in a healthier, more constructive way. Your coping plan might include calling a friend, taking a walk, or writing in a journal. Eat meals regularly A meal and snack schedule can prevent you from going back to disordered eating. Plan your meals and snacks ahead of time, and don’t skip any!  Eat three meals a day, plus snacks, at regular times (about every 3 hours). A consistent schedule will be good for both your emotional and physical health. Your family may be able to help by making sure that you eat meals together as often as possible. Keep busy and stay involved Get involved in a hobby or activity that you enjoy and that makes you happy. It can be anything from arts & crafts, to volunteering, to nature walks, to joining a club. If you make time to do the things you enjoy, or to do nice things for others, your focus will shift away from your eating disorder. It can also help to keep you motivated to recover and to stay connected to your surroundings and the people in your community. Make time for yourself It is important to take time to do something good for yourself every day. Some people find it helpful to use this time to relax or reflect. Some do yoga or meditation, some draw, paint, write, or listen to music. No matter what you choose, remind yourself that you are important. You deserve to take this time to do something that is just for you!

Relapse prevention and healthy nutrition-Quick tips for healthy living

Nutrition is the process of breaking down food and substances taken in by the mouth to use for energy in the body or it is the process of obtaining and consuming food. By practicing a healthy diet, many of the known health issues can be avoided. With good nutrition comes healthy living. Therefore, healthy living is all about moderation, balance and flexibility. Attaining this may be difficult because there will be some days when you don’t eat healthy foods and some days when you don’t do enough exercise. This is totally normal in your busy, sometimes stressful, life. You get a more accurate picture of how you’ve been doing if you look back over the past month or so. For the month ahead, aim to make small changes that will improve your health, both mental and physical. Here are some ideas:

  • Nourish your body throughout the day—avoid skipping meals
  • Eat a variety of foods and aim for a balance over the month
  • Rather than worry about ‘good’ versus ‘bad’ foods, remember that moderation is the key
  • Try to eat more fruits and vegetables
  • Drink lots of water. It helps reduce fatigue and replenishes the body
  • Use caffeine in moderation, particularly if you are prone to anxiety or sleep problems
  • Listen to your body’s signals—it will let you know when you are full or hungry. Become more conscious of why you eat when you are not really hungry. Try to find other ways to cope with feelings of boredom, unhappiness, loneliness or social pressure
  • Use exercise as a way to deal with stress
  • Slowly increase your physical activity level
  • Consider joining a gym or other formal exercise program
  • Check out your local community centre for a range of fun options and programs people of all ages
  • Try adding in extra activity throughout your normal day, such as parking a block from work and walking the rest of the way or using the stairs instead of the elevator. Even getting up to change TV channels can make a difference!
  • Remind yourself that weight and shape are not the only way to evaluate your self-worth—think of at least one other way that shows you are a worthwhile, loveable, talented person who has something to offer the world

Walk With Jennifer, Weight Loss Progress Report

Walk With Jennifer, AWAREmed, Dr. Dalal Akoury, weight loss, healthy lifestyle

Can you believe it?!

Jennifer has been working with the AWAREmed weight loss program for approximately 3 weeks and you can already see a big difference! Although obese patients want to see instant weight loss results, it’s a slow process, but, as you can see, even in a short period of time there is a visual difference.

Jennifer says:

“So far things are going very well, Im getting used to eating right, I haven’t had any cravings at all, I have been exercising everyday and I feel so much better. My blood pressure is almost at normal and I can breathe right for the first time in a very long time, it’s getting easier in some ways but I know I still have a long road ahead. I will not give up!

I am so determined to be successful with my weight loss and be 100 % as healthy as I can be! I think having to be accountable for my actions publicly makes me even more determined to not mess up! Showing myself on television was really hard, but the last show we did, I was much prouder of the way I looked on camera.

What I expect to gain from this is the knowledge of how to eat right and replace my bad habits with good habits, such as exercising everyday instead of sitting in front of the television eating whatever I want.”

Remember, not everyone will have the same weight loss results in the same amount of time.

The complete program with AWAREmed consists of meal changes and nutrition coaching with Patricia Coppola, specific supplements for the individual, and special IV therapy and injections, again, tailored to the individual. And along with this, and perhaps just as important to see results, is regular exercise. Jennifer has been walking as well as beginning twice a week workout sessions with a trainer.

Sessions with Jillian Maas Backman  help with setting new intentions, using a personal power statement to push through the times when it seems too hard, and motivation to take a deeper, more spiritual look inside and come to a new understanding of the self, before, during and after weight loss.

Even if you can’t do the complete weight loss program, you can still become a part of Walk With Jennifer by making the simple changes in diet and exercise. You can add the supplements, and you can add the IV therapy if you choose, but it’s not a requirement.

It’s your choice, choose to change!  Let’s help each other by spreading the word and this website!
