Why it is necessary to help drug addicts

Why it is necessary to help drug addicts. This is very necessary not just for the victims but also to the whole societies

I once told us in one of the articles that our health is the most valuable assets we can ever have. In fact in that article I did mentioned that it is one asset that we cannot quantify its value into monetary by all standards. Even though various insurance firms are trying to quantify health in some instances, the compensations they give will only remain to be very insignificant compensations in relation to good health and life. This treasure is currently under threat and it is being attacked from all directions by different obstacles including substance abuse. It is because of these threats that we are now trying to understand in this article why it is necessary to help drug addicts recover from this epidemics of addiction. There are several benefits of helping victims get well some of which we discussed previously and we also want to further the discussion in that same direction even as we come to terms with the real challenges of substance abuse.

Why it is necessary to help drug addicts: Benefits of Early Identification and Action

Like in all other health complications, early detection of substance abuse is very vital for proper healing. Therefore because our children are the major targets of bad influence it is important for all of us to ensure that no trace of addiction is left unresolved. Any untreated problems if left to continue, it is possible that family members will develop their own issues out of the unresolved problems thereby creating further emotional complications. Common symptoms include headaches, backaches, digestive problems and depression, anxiety and panic attacks. Children of substance users can experience school behavior problems and poor academic performance and are more likely to become substance users themselves.

It is not easy to live with someone who is using mind-altering substances. Taking steps to begin treatment and recovery can be a painful process, but it is the only path that holds promise for something better. As long as family members deny that there is a problem, the problem will progress and so will be the suffering. Doctor Akoury suggests that your starting point in situations like this should be by seeking for help all for yourself. You can begin by restoring your own emotional stability by bringing in new direction and meaning to your life. You will be better equipped to deflect crises and arguments, and shift interactions with your impaired friend or family member. Getting help for yourself may seem counter-intuitive, but it is crucial for you so that you can cope better with the myriad problems that emerge and effectively overcome the obstacles to wellness and recovery.

Some people find when they seek help for themselves that the person with the substance use problem gets angry, perhaps because the efforts represent a loss of control. Also, getting help signals that you are serious about changing the situation. Some people threaten those seeking help to stop their efforts. Nonetheless these are normal set bucks and it is important that you remain firm in your resolve to go forward, and be aware of your personal safety. Remember that it is never too soon or too late for you or for the substance user to seek help, the best time is always now. This journey will not be a smooth one, there will be obstacles and challenges all the way but seeking for help from the experts at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under the able leadership of doctor Dalal Akoury will be very ideal in ensuring that this problem is defeated and eliminated completely out of your life.

Besides that a must attend conference, drug addiction is and will never be good for any human life, in fact as we move from one generation to another, the complications of addiction also moves to greater levels. If you were to study the impact of substance abuse in the last three decades, you will come to appreciate that the complexity of addiction is also evolving with the changes we have in our day today lifestyle. This is one thing that we must by all means fight and defeat. The lives of our future generation depend heavily on the good choices we are going to make today. That is why doctor Akoury is taking very seriously the effects of alcohol addiction and all other drug related problems. In this article, we are going to look at the effects of alcohol abuse on heart diseases and stroke alongside cancer. Therefore keep reading and get the best medical information about addiction for your own health protection.

Why alcohol should be your foremost enemy: Effect on Heart Disease and Stroke

It is often said that moderate amounts (one to two drinks a day) of alcohol can improve some heart disease risk factors, such as increasing HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels. However, at this time there is no definitive scientific evidence or proof that moderate drinking improves overall health says doctor Dalal Akoury an expert of over two decades. The luck of proper authentication about this hypothesis explains why bodies like the American Heart Association have not recommended drinking alcoholic beverages solely to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Excessive drinking clearly has negative effects on heart health. Alcohol is a toxin that damages the heart muscle. In fact, heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for alcoholics. Alcohol abuse increases levels of triglycerides (unhealthy fats) and increases the risks for high blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke. In addition, the extra calories in alcohol can contribute to obesity, a major risk factor for many heart problems.

Why alcohol should be your foremost enemy: Cancer

Experts across the globe are in agreement that alcohol abuse and dependence may increase the risk for certain type of cancers. In particular, heavy alcohol use appears to increase the risks for mouth, throat, esophageal, gastrointestinal, liver, and colorectal, cancers. Even moderate drinking can increase the risk of breast cancer. Although the additional risk is small, women who are at high risk for breast cancer should consider not drinking at all. But most importantly to continually consult with their doctors for a more professional treatment approach.

Why alcohol should be your foremost enemy: Effects on the Lungs

Pneumonia – Over time, chronic alcoholism can cause severe reductions in white blood cells, which increase the risk for community acquired pneumonia (pneumonia acquired outside of hospitals or nursing homes). When patients are inebriated they are also at risk for aspiration of mucus from the airways, causing pneumonia. Patients who abuse alcoholism have a greater risk for developing severe pneumonia. Doctors recommend that patients with alcohol dependence receive an annual pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination. Therefore it is important that everybody should be well informed of the initial signs of pneumococcal pneumonia which include the following high fever, cough and stabbing chest pains. When these signs are noted then that calls for an immediate appointment with your doctor. Remember that under normal circumstances prevention is always the best but now that we have some signs treatment becomes necessary and that is why scheduling for an appointment with doctor Dalal Akoury becomes the better option and for you the professionals, attending the August Integrative Addiction Conference 2015 is a great opportunity to shine in your career, the contact details is as stipulated above.

The family union in fighting Heroin Addiction

The family union in fighting Heroin Addiction: The battles of Heroin Addiction in Families?

The family union in fighting Heroin Addiction

The family union in fighting Heroin Addiction must start before conception and to continue for life.

It is always said that a family that eat together stays together. Togetherness is one thing that is becoming very elusive in this generation of work and commitment. Parents are never there for their children and even for themselves. We are all looking for means of putting food on the table yet when that food is on the table we are not there to share it. Children eat alone as do the parents. In the previous two articles doctor Dalal Akoury has been taking us through the life and times of what heroin addicts go through either as individuals or as a group. We followed the story of Jimssy family and their struggle with addiction and what they were not able to do well that landed them into more problems. This family has seen it all and we want to sum up this discussion by looking at the family union in fighting heroin addiction and still following up on the conclusion story of the family of Jimssy.

The family union in fighting Heroin Addiction: Quitting or Stopping addiction

From the story of Jimssy, when their son watched her mother crying in pain and her father trying to calm her down by a shot of heroin, they all realize that something had to be done. What did they do? Keep reading and find out what the family union in fighting heroin addiction can do for you and your family. After this episode, Jimssy made effort to quit drugs on her own and each time she did, she failed to have a break through. It was after several attempts that Jim her husband gave a helping hand and she went cold turkey for two days but even this did not help and the condition became unbearable for her. She began shaking and sweating loosing muscle control in the process.

Initially when she was opting for change, she had made Jim promised her never to give her any drug no matter the case, but when she could not control herself and the need for drug took center stage she violently screamed for drugs and looking at her suffering, Jim gave in to avoid having a major seizure. While all this was happening, their son J.J was watching, seeing his mom have to lay there and be that sick and scream and cry, or watching her shoot dope. It then done on them that cold turkey was not working for her. She then remembered that years back when she first found out that Jim was a heroin addict, she had convinced him to seek for professional assistance from doctor Dalal Akoury which he did and for the 10 years with the help of doctor Akoury she had a very happy and productive marriage. Though Jim relapsed at some point, she realized that Dalal Akoury, Founder of AWAREmed Health and Wellness under the able leadership of doctor Akoury and her team of experts were her only way out.

She checked into the recovery program at this facility which also included methadone maintenance with counseling. And even though she wasn’t sure if it was going to work but her resolve to try kept her going and Jim was with her when she threw her needles away. She says that they broke them and tossed them away for the very first time.

The family union in fighting Heroin Addiction: Focus on Family

Since she started down the road to recovery, she hasn’t done any heroin. But that didn’t happen until she lost her home, totaled two cars, and almost saw her marriage collapse. Now living with relatives, she and her husband are trying to get their lives back in order. He’s back at work. They enrolled in a family counseling program, Focus on Families, where they were learning to be better parents and help their kids cope with their parents’ addiction.

Unfortunately, Jim relapsed about six weeks after starting the Focus on Families program, and the family dropped out. Jimssy had to go back to work in order to support the family, and her working hours prevented her from being able to take care of the children and continue the Focus on Families therapy sessions. Several months later, fortunately, Jim was able to get back to Dalal Akoury, Founder of AWAREmed Health and Wellness for a recovery program on his own, and he is now coping to maintain his sobriety.

Jimssy says she is glad to be getting back her life. She used to get up and, first thing, get a drug fix. Now, she gets up and makes coffee and visits the doctor Akoury office for follow up. “I’m learning to live a whole new way again.” She enjoys getting up with her kids, helping them get ready for school, and doing other routine things like driving her husband to work every day. “We are slowly getting things back to sort of normal,” she says.

Jimssy is not so sure of the effects of their actions and how it will impact on their children and especially for J.J. who knows that what his they did was wrong, illegal, and something they could have been thrown in jail for. He knows what drugs can do, he’s seen it firsthand.” Despite the horror of his finding Jim overdosed, she hopes the scene remains vivid in J.J.’s mind, as a deterrent to doing drugs. “If my son has to see something like that to keep the needle out of his arm, than I’d rather have that than see him someday dead from heroin.” Together they have enrolled their son J.J. into baseball and soccer so that he will become more interested in sports than mind-altering drugs.

Although it’s been a rough two years since she quit using heroin, Jimssy says she is finally starting to see herself as a “normal person” again: “Finally things are starting to open up again. I’m starting to see that there’s more out there to life than sitting around doing drugs thanks to doctor Dalal Akoury and the family of AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center.” What a story? Now you know and the decision is yours, choose wisely.

Parental Obligations in controlling Drug Addiction

Parental Obligations in controlling Drug Addiction: Important Facts to Observe

Parental Obligations in controlling Drug Addiction

Parental Obligations in controlling Drug Addiction is key irrespective of your economical engagements.

While looking at the roles of parents in taming substance abuse in our previous article, we highlighted certain lesion points from what other parents have experience while exercising their parental obligations in controlling drug addiction. It became clear that most of us have let our children plunge in to the intoxication of addiction, for very simple reasons like denial. Of the seven lessons we were able to address two and we want to progress with the remaining five as we progress into this discussion as follows:

  1. My addict is a liar
  2. My addict is a criminal
  3. Others don’t want them around
  4. Life will not be the same
  5. Homelessness may be the path he chooses

Parental Obligations in controlling Drug Addiction: My Addict is a Liar

Traditionally addicts will often find something to hide their habits with and ensure that their real business is not exposed. It is possible that when they are making all these efforts of concealment, they may not be in their proper senses to tell exactly what they are doing. They are actually not even aware that they are lying because to them, they are telling you exactly what you want to hear. Normally they their motive is sincere of trying to seek your approval of their deeds and not really for pride. It is also true that most addicts are not happy with themselves for their actions are only that they have no way out at least while still in that state of mind. At this point their only survival ways would be to seek for some approval by telling lies no matter the consequences. As parents we will be laid to whether it is an innocent lie or not, it will still remain to be a lie. Like in my case when my addicted son tells me that he is not abusing drugs, I don’t buy that and instead I tell him repeatedly that “my eyes can hear even better than my ears” because ideally what they say is not what is really happening. It is therefore very important that we make efforts of finding facts for ourselves and not relying on what the children tell us. If you were to rely on what they say you may be surprised that you have no clue of who your child really is. Choose to be on top of everything so that you can be in a better position of protecting your children from all the harms of drug addictions.

Parental Obligations in controlling Drug Addiction: My addict is a Criminal

It is normal to feel hurt when someone tells you that your child is a criminal or is showing signs of being one. Honestly I won’t take that kindly but when it comes to drug abuse, before you get angry and dismiss in rage the whistle blower about the behavior of your son, investigate. Remember that symptoms of this disease include illegal behaviors and criminality is justified. But as many would become outrageous about such adjectives so will be the consequences of drug addiction. Substance abuse can cause your child to be incarcerated. So be warned and if you don’t heed the warnings, then be ready to face up to it dear parents. If he has done things wrong under the influence of his addiction, you must be ready to pay the price to the society. It will do you no good to bad mouth the police, judges, prisons, advocates and so on. Remember that this people or institutions did not cause the problem neither did they put him there instead it is his actions that sent him there.

I know this may not sound good to most of us because of the attachment we have with our children. But wait a minute, interrogate your memory line and remember that one fateful evening when you were at the comfort of your living room and you heard gun short in your neighborhood. You were terrified and when calm was restored you realized that it was your best friend who was the victim and he did not make it. Luckily the thugs were arrested and this was the head line news in the subsequent days. The thugs were all found guilty and sentenced according to the provisions of the law. Am justifying that when we read about others or watch on TV and in jail we appreciate how much they deserve to be there but our babies aren’t like them. In my view and this is from experience is that, it doesn’t how we can justify and separate the wrongs by misdemeanor and felony but the truth is those are legal terms to which our children are not immune to. Am not saying that you should be happy about it, No because no one can, the law needs to be applied to all and if my addicted son has done some wrong things that got him put in there, it is very sad and painful not just for me as a parent but to the whole society and he must pay for his actions.

Parental Obligations in controlling Drug Addiction: Others don’t want them around

Isolation is one element that people don’t want to be associated with. However acts of violence and hooliganism arising out of substance abuse often cause people to keep distance from the victims. Therefore if the society feels otherwise and they don’t want them (our addicted) sons and daughters, then that are justified because they have wronged the society and its people. I am in agreement with my fellow parents that we all ore our children that unconditional love, and for sure as an individual I love my children unconditionally, that is the indisputable truth and it will remain that way so long as am still alive. However it is not wrong in any way for friends, brothers, sisters, grandparents, relatives to have their own feelings and pain about this situation. We are all at liberty to make choices and if we make the wrong choices, there will be consequences. Finally no matter the consequences our (AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center) doors are always open for you daily. We are standing in the gap for you and will be more than willing to offer our expertise in your addiction recovery. Our team of experts led by doctor Dalal Akoury will be there waiting for your appointment call and in the most confidential and professional manner address your individual situations satisfactorily.

Legal High Drugs

Legal High Drugs-Drug Addiction

Legal high drugs

A drug is a drug whether legal high or very known hard drugs we must all take the responsibility of stopping their addiction in our lives.

The threat of addiction is not new to us because in many ways we find ourselves being addicted to several things. There are so many elements of addiction that we are associated with and we are not even sure if we are addicted to them. When the word addiction is mention we often think straight to hard drugs and other known social activities that are addictive in nature. This feeling is very much in order because those are also some elements we can be addicted to. What many may not know is that we can be addicted even to some legal drugs that does not necessarily illegal and that is what is going to guide the flow of this article. Known as a collection of drugs which are sold legally and which mimic the effects of illegal drugs such as cannabis, ecstasy and cocaine. Some of these drugs may include herbal smoking mixtures, diet pills (ephedrine), herbal ecstasy and mephedrone. We can also include GHB, BZP (benzylpiperazine) poppers such as amyl nitrite and caffeine drinks/pills.

Legal high

This are kinds of substances with the same effects as an illegal drug but can be bought legally, and openly. They are not regulated by the Misuse of Drugs Act although changes have been, or are being made to control these substances. Many of these drugs are naturally occurring substances but the most recent one -mephedrone, has been synthetically produced in laboratories.

Legal High Drugs-Appearance

They take different looks in the market with some being are herbal solutions which can be mixed with tobacco and smoked normally while others like mephedrone come in as white powder or in tablets or capsules forms. Poppers such as amyl nitrite or butyl nitrite are inhaled while others like ephedrine are found in over the counter medicines or pills used for weight control.

Legal High Drugs-Methods of Usage

They can be taken be taken in several ways that is: orally, smoked, inhaled, added to drinks or injected though this last method of consumption is very rare.

Legal High Drugs-Their street names

Like any other drugs legal high drugs also have their street nouns. Many of these substances have ‘trade names’ that is to say their brand names for marketing purposes for example the herbal smoking mixture or solution is known as ‘Spice’. Other names may include:

  • Meow Meow (mephedrone)
  • Herbal Viagra
  • Eclipse (herbal ecstasy)
  • Cloud 9 (herbal ecstasy/ephedrine)
  • Liquid gold (poppers)

These drugs are often used by young people and particularly the youth, clubbers and festival goers.

Effects of legal highs

The effects of these drugs vary depending on which substance you are using. For example, if you smoke Spice then you will experience that the effects are similar to those of cannabis also known as marijuana. Such feelings will include:

  • Feeling relaxed and ‘chilled out’ or hyperactive
  • Talkative and giggly

Majority of users will find that their sensitivities have been altered or that they experience mild hallucinations. Drug like mephedrone will have similar effects to those from using ecstasy or cocaine. The experiences may include:

  • Euphoria
  • Increased confidence
  • Lots of energy
  • Empathy with others
  • It can also suppress the appetite
  • Speed up the heart rate
  • Reduce inhibitions.

Spice and herbal Viagra e.g. yohimbine are added to loose tobacco and smoked as a cigarette or through a pipe. They cause hallucinogenic effects and also act upon the body in a similar way to ecstasy.

Herbal ecstasy such as Cloud 9 acts as a stimulant on the body thereby increasing the heart rate and breathing, a sense of euphoria, dilated pupils and being talkative generally. It can also cause hallucinogenic effects such as a heightened awareness of one’s surroundings.

Liquid gold and other types of poppers cause an intense ‘rush’ when inhaled which also includes feelings of disorientation, nausea, dizziness and headaches. They can also improve sexual performance.

How addictive are legal highs?

If these legal highs are legally allowed drugs, one would wonder whether they have any addictive effects and the answer is absolutely yes. Many of these substances are characterized in the same way as synthetic drugs meaning that they can lead to dependency over a period of time of their usage for example a drug like mephedrone is similar to ecstasy in the sense that it is highly addictive and leads to psychological changes in the user. People who use mephedrone find it very difficult to stop. Besides them being addictive, it must be noted that these drugs/substances are more powerful than many people realize and can be as equally as addictive as their illegal cousins or sisters.

Risks factors of legal highs

Because of their sources it is prudent to note that some of these drugs are not regulated under the Misuse of Drugs Act however an amendment to this effect has been made making it illegal to sell or supply them for human use under the medicines legislation.

But it is very easy to assume that because these drugs are freely available that they are safer than synthetic varieties. Even the herbal substances such as Spice or Salvia have side effects.

The technicality is that a good percentage of these substances contain all kinds of chemicals which have not always been tested for human consumption. So you are not quite sure what you are getting and the effect it will have on your system. Currently we do not have authenticate research or studies confirming the duration of risk and so it is not clear the effects of long term health risks if any. However when combined with other substances like alcohol then this increases the risks and such increased risks can be physical risks e.g. hypertension, heart disease, nosebleeds, weight loss, tremors and diabetes.  On the other hand the risks may be psychological risks like anxiety, panic attacks, memory loss, paranoia and even schizophrenia.

Finally when we begin talking of the risks involved then we must also talk about remedies for those risks. If for whatever reason you or your friend is struggling with problems related to legal high drugs then the solution is just a phone call away. Rich out for doctor Dalal Akoury an expert in matter addiction and the founder of AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under Doctor Akoury.
