Solving addiction worries by asking to know action point: Is there a difference between physical dependence and addiction?

The answer to this is absolutely yes. It is important to note that besides the chronic and harmful consequences that come with addiction, it is also characterized by the weakness or failure to stop using that particular drug; neglecting or failure to meet work, social, or family obligations; and, occasionally depending on the drug, tolerance and withdrawal. When tolerance sets in, the consequence is that the of physical dependence meaning that the body adapts to the drug, thereby demanding for more of it to achieve a certain effect (tolerance) and eliciting drug-specific physical or mental symptoms especially where there is a sudden stoppage (withdrawal) of the supply/use of the drug in question.

Physical dependence can happen with the chronic use of many drugs—including many prescription drugs, even if taken as instructed. Thus, physical dependence in and of itself does not constitute addiction, but it often accompanies addiction. This distinction can be difficult to discern, particularly with prescribed pain medications, for which the need for increasing dosages can represent tolerance or a worsening underlying problem, as opposed to the beginning of abuse or addiction.

How do other mental disorders coexisting with drug addiction affect drug addiction treatment?

In response to this concern, it is important first to note that drug addiction is not behavior but a disease of the brain commonly coming with other mental disorders. Available statistics indicate that up to 6 in every 10 people struggling with an illicit substance use disorder equally suffer from another mental illness; the same is true with users of licit drugs like tobacco and alcohol. Many of the people struggling with addiction are also suffering from mental disorders what is medically known as co-occurrence condition 9suffering from tow conditions at the same time). Successful treatment for such patients sometimes become very difficult more so if individual conditions are addressed differently. Because of the intertwined condition, both conditions must be assessed and treatment done simultaneously. Experts are in agreement that treating both illnesses simultaneously in an integrated fashion which is generally the best treatment approach for these patients.

Is the use of medications like methadone and buprenorphine simply replacing one addiction with another?

This is a good question but the answer to that is No. these (Buprenorphine and methadone) are prescription drugs only administered under medical experts authorization, they are taken under strict adherence of medical doctors and are safe and effective for treating opioid addiction when used as directed. They are administered orally or sublingually (i.e., under the tongue) in specified doses, and their effects differ from those of heroin and other abused opioids. Like for instance, heroin is administered through injection, snorting or smoked thereby causing an immediate “rush of intense euphoria. The rush is then short lived and in just a little while it wears off and ends in a “crash.” At the point individual will experience an intense craving to use the drug again to stop the crash and reinstate the euphoria. If this is not managed well the cycle of euphoria, crash, and craving may continue repeated several times in a day. This is often the most painful part or stage of addiction which must be addressed in the best and most professional manner.

Solving addiction worries by asking to know action point: Can exercise play a role in the treatment process?

Many people become less active as they approach their sunset days but this is one of the biggest mistakes we often make. And so in response to the question the answer is “Yes.” Exercise should be done regularly and it is increasingly proving to be one of the most attractive components in many treatment programs more so when combined with cognitive-behavioral therapy. Exercise may exert beneficial effects by addressing psychosocial and physiological needs that nicotine replacement alone does not, by reducing negative feelings and stress, and by helping prevent weight gain following cessation.

How does drug addiction treatment help reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis C (HCV)?

Looking at the mode of administration of most of these drugs, they are mostly administered through injection. And one of the characteristic of drugs is that it causes users to lose focus. It is at this point when the damage is done. When users are drunk the will most likely share the needles they use further putting them at more risk of contracting HIN/AIDS and other STDI. Besides that drug-abusing individuals are likely to engage in risky sexual behavior further subjecting them to the risk of contracting these diseases. Finally by now you must have appreciated why solving addiction worries is very important if we have to live a more healthy life. It is our desire to see you enjoy your life for a very long time. Therefore if you or any one you know is struggling with any kind of addiction, you have an opportunity to redeem yourself by scheduling for an appointment with doctor Dalal Akoury for professional treatment.

Rehabilitating mental health coverage under Obamacare

Rehabilitating mental health coverage: When addictive health needs to be taken seriously

Rehabilitating mental health

In the new dispensation of rehabilitating mental health coverage under Obamacare, health experts must now take the lead role in ensuring that treatment is professionally done.

For quite a long time addictive health matters have not been taken seriously especially when it comes to insurance health covers. Many insurance institutions have not seen this viable for them and where cover is applicable then the premiums are often very high to the reach of a few in the society. This has been a big impediment in finding lasting solutions to alcohol and drug addiction complications. Just recently the US government introduced the now famous Obamacare which has been received with much appreciation to many. In our continued quest of posting informative blogs that are tailored towards elimination of drug addiction, we want to focus on the rehabilitating mental health coverage under Obamacare as it is commonly known. Doctor Dalal Akoury MD and President of AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center has been consistent in her several decades of delivering quality health care to drug addiction patients that a medical standard of care is a very critical factor for all services provided within any health care industry. She agrees that the Obamacare, also known as the Affordable Care Act, has brought in some relief to the health sector by extending these standards to the medical areas of drug addiction rehabilitation and mental health. This has been long overdue. Nevertheless the methods of rehabilitation delivery are very instrumental and are centered on certain health care coverage. To understand these facts well, the following points will explain precisely the modern delivery methods for mental health:

Rehabilitating mental health coverage: Rehabilitation

The modern Obamacare mental health delivery system is focused on rehabilitation services. These current rehabilitation services include addictions treatment therapies and other dual treatment services which have been lucking in the past with many policies. This now makes it possible for patients to get treatment in these areas at a minimal fee and that is a significant step towards elimination of addiction.

Rehabilitating mental health coverage: Mental health

With the introduction of Obamacare, patients can now access health services provided by several institutions since the current mental health delivery services include dual diagnostic treatment plans. The mental health services may also involve in house treatment for certain addictive behaviors and various chemical addictions. Remember that in house treatment can always be delivered in a hospital setting or a structured rehabilitation center for addictions. Therefore if you have or you know of anyone who is struggling with any kind of addiction, you can be the ambassador of hope to them by scheduling for an appointment with the experts at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center so that prompt treatment action can be taken professionally.

Rehabilitating mental health coverage under Obamacare: Addictions

Drug addiction is a common and one of the most disturbing phenomenon in nearly all nations across the globe. Like for instance the U.S. population today has significant addictions treatment needs across the states and this Obamacare couldn’t have come at the right time. It is however important to note that the context of addictions include those for alcohol misuse, prescription medication addictions, and street drug addictions. Many of the in house patient disorders today include an additional diagnosis of addictive disorder. These chemical addictions affect young people today and are affecting older adults as well.

Rehabilitating mental health coverage: Therapy and treatment options

When it comes to treatment options for addictive disorders careful consideration must be taken depending on the individual special needs. The available treatment options may include in house rehabilitation providing medical care during an addiction withdrawal and besides that medical care can be necessary for an addictive personality in order for the patient to learn new coping methods. During the rehabilitation process there will be both in house individual and group therapies. Alcohol and drug support groups are also available within these treatment programs. And remember that there are usually certain treatment steps that are followed within these rehabilitation centers. The modern mental health delivery system provides more of a direct care and focused therapy for the prevalent addictions within the U.S. social network.

As we come to the conclusion of this discussion, we must also appreciate the fact that over the years there has been some medical error hitting at the forefront of several prominent health care issues. The fact is that there is a growing concern about the use of certain medications to treat incoming patients. It must be strongly noted that any errors in diagnosis can lead to the wrong treatment being delivered. Statistics also revealed that delayed care or a lab test wrongly diagnosing a patient illness have been blamed for certain subsequent medical problems in the past. It is because of such errors that have made the problem of addictions to have risen to prominence following certain results of delayed care or no care for patient disorders. The other drawback has been that of self-medication which has actually caused problem for some current medical patients who cannot receive proper care. However the modern medical delivery system has addressed some of these current problems effectively and therefore any previous illnesses are no longer an excuse for insurance companies to drop coverage for a patient says doctor Dalal Akoury.

Finally Obamacare is now directing the current medical issues relating to mental health and addictive disorders. Under this program rehabilitation and mental health have begun to unify into a dual diagnostic delivery system. Therapy and treatment options today are now considered as a dual diagnostic health care portal which involves in house treatment and therapies for addictions. Mental health is concentrating round corrective services as well. These corrections services are sending many enslaved individuals to rehabilitation services and outpatient treatment facilities. Preventive care and positive responses are both a part of Obamacare rehabilitation. Obamacare is now one of the modern avenues for rehabilitation and addictions. Under this the preventive and proactive services include individual and in house services that address the underlying issues. Lifestyle changes are stimulated and proper diagnosing and treatment of a modern addictive disorder can help to promote effective recovery. This has been quite a relief for many and therefore we must all join in to bring this scourge to its knees by scheduling for an appointment with the experts from AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center for further professional advice.

Changing Lifestyle for Better Bone Health

Changing Lifestyle for Better Bone Health: What will work for you?

Changing Lifestyle for Better Bone Health

Changing Lifestyle for Better Bone Health begins with an active life and health diet

Who doesn’t want to live a good life? Certainly no one yet most of our choice activities point to the opposite. I mentioned previously that the beauty of any individual is from the inside. When you have healthy bones which forms the body structure, then you will externalize that beauty. All of us are vulnerable to the effects of osteoporosis by virtue of growth and more so when we get to old age. To reduce this vulnerability we want to discuss how changing lifestyle for better bone health can be effective. And start you off, you may need to maximize bone health and reduce the effects of osteoporosis with these simple guidelines. It is wise that for you to succeed in this journey, you will need to consult frequently with your doctor for direction. And if your doctor says that you have thinning bones, osteopenia or osteoporosis, it’s critical to take steps to slow the progression of this disease. Remember that calcium, exercise, no smoking, no excess drinking and bone density tests are very necessary says doctor Akoury, MD, and founder of AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center where it all begins.

Doctor Akoury adds that because women are the most vulnerable, it would be very important that they take these basic things seriously. However, the basics are especially important for women with low bone density. It is worth appreciating that while we may not be able to fully regain the bone density we once had in our youthful life, we can help prevent rapid thinning of our bones, even after diagnosis is confirmed. The following are therefore some of the positive lifestyle changes which will help you on the road to better bone health:

We want to discuss the first tow and progress with the remaining three in our next article so don’t be in a hurry to leave there is more for you with the experts at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under the able leadership of Doctor Akoury’s care.

Changing Lifestyle for Better Bone Health: Calcium and Vitamin D

The two pieces of nutrients work hand in hand to help in the restoration of the bone health. Calcium act primarily in building strong bones and it efforts are complimented with vitamin D which facilitates the body’s absorption of calcium. That explains why postmenopausal women need 1,200 milligrams calcium and at least 400 IU to 600 IU vitamin D daily for better bone health. Doctor Akoury advices that patients undergoing treatment of osteoporosis should have both calcium and vitamin D levels checked in blood tests. Most women across the globe and particularly in the US get less than 500 milligrams of calcium in their daily diet. Being exposed in the sun also helps in the production of vitamin D, however as we get older, our skin its efficiency in making vitamin D. Nevertheless if we’re only careful in using sunscreen, we may be at risk of having low vitamin D level. The following can be helpful in boosting both calcium and vitamin D in your body”

Calcium in food – We know that dairy has calcium, but other foods do, too.

  • Low-fat milk or soy milk (8 ounces) – 300 milligrams calcium
  • Cottage cheese (16 ounces) – 300 milligrams calcium
  • Low-fat yogurt (8 ounces) – 250-400 milligrams calcium
  • Canned salmon (3 ounces) – 180 milligrams calcium
  • Calcium-fortified orange juice (6 ounces): 200 milligrams-260 milligrams calcium
  • Cooked spinach, turnip greens, collard greens (1/2 cup) – 100 milligrams calcium
  • Cooked broccoli (1/2 cup) 40 milligrams calcium

Just to be sure of the sufficiency of calcium supplement may be necessary to compliment the food stuff.

Calcium supplements – be keen so that the many calcium bottles on the stores do not confuse you. We are actually having two types of calcium that is to say the calcium carbonate and calcium citrate that can be purchased over the counter.

  • Calcium carbonate must be taken with food for the body to absorb it. Many women have side effects from calcium carbonate like gastrointestinal upset, gassiness, and constipation. If you take calcium carbonate with magnesium, however, you are likely not to have the constipation. It acts just like Milk of Magnesia and seems to help move things through.
  • Calcium citrate is generally well tolerated, and can be taken without food. However, you might need to take more than one pill to get the recommended dosage it is therefore advisable that you take them at different time intervals to help your body absorb the calcium. If you take more than about 500 milligrams of calcium at one time your body will simply pass it as waste.

Check the supplement’s label before buying – Look for either pharmaceutical grade or USP (United States Pharmacopeia) standards. This will ensure high-quality pills that will dissolve in your system. And don’t underrate the generic brands because they are equally fine if they have that information.

Don’t forget vitamin D – Most calcium pills and multivitamins contain vitamin D. However, you can get vitamin D in food (fortified dairy products, egg yolks, saltwater fish like tuna, and liver). Research suggests that vitamin D3 supplements may be a little bit better absorbed and retained than Vitamin D2.

If you’re taking osteoporosis medications, take calcium, too – Many patients tend to think that when they start treatment they don’t need calcium. That is not true, and physicians often don’t emphasize the point.

Take prescription calcium if necessary – If it becomes necessary in isolated cases, doctors may prescribe higher-strength calcium and vitamin D tablets.

Changing Lifestyle for Better Bone Health: Bone Density Testing

Many people may tell you otherwise but the truth is that it is only a bone mineral density test (BMD) that is used to determine the extent of your bone loss. The gold-standard bone density test is dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA). This is a low-radiation test which is considered to be the most accurate bone test available. Remember that this test must be guided and you can’t just chose to do it. Therefore your doctor will determine how frequently you should have a bone density test. And remember that if you’re on osteoporosis medications or have certain risk factors, you may need a test every six months. Finally we have only looked at the first tow and we are yet to finish with the last three. Join us in the next article to get the insight and together we can keep our bones healthy.

Now the best approach would be to venture into meaningful exercise which is able to turn the tables round from osteoporosis to healthy bones. We can therefore try weight bearing workouts that stresses bones and muscles slightly more than your everyday life. We are going to be discussing some in this article, but it would be advisable that you consult with your doctor first to be sure that the workout you choose is safe for you. It is only then that you may want to consider from the following trends.

The Weight Bearing Exercise for Osteoporosis: Tai Chi

Tai chi a form of relaxed, smooth and flowing moves that builds both coordination and strong bones. According to a study reported in Physician and Sports medicine it was found that tai chi could slow bone loss in postmenopausal women. During the study the women who did 45 minutes of tai chi a day, five days a week for a year, enjoyed a rate of bone loss up to three-and-a-half times slower than the non-tai-chi group. Their bone health gains showed up on bone mineral density tests.

The Weight Bearing Exercise for Osteoporosis: Yoga

According to a study reported in Yoga Journal it was established that there was an increase in bone mineral density in the spine for women who did yoga regularly. From the slow, precise Iyengar style to the athletic, vigorous ashtanga, yoga can build bone health in your hips, spine, and wrists the bones most vulnerable to fracture.

Standing poses like Warrior I and II work the large bones of the hips and legs, while poses like Downward Dog work the wrists, arms, and shoulders. Both the Cobra and Locust poses, which work the back muscles, may preserve the health of the spine. Yoga also sharpens your balance, coordination, concentration, and body awareness and thus helps prevent falls.

The Weight Bearing Exercise for Osteoporosis: Brisk Walking

One fitness trend that never goes away, walking is still hugely popular among women and a great way to revamp your bone health. A study of nurses found that walking four hours a week gave them a 41% lower risk of hip fractures, compared to walking less than an hour a week. Brisk walking is best, but you can adapt your speed to your current fitness level. Walking is free, and you can do it anywhere, anytime, even when you’re traveling.

The Weight Bearing Exercise for Osteoporosis: Golf

Maybe you’ve always thought golf was for old folks people who could no longer do “real” sports. If this thought ever crossed your mind, then you need to think again. Just carrying that golf bag around 18 holes, and swinging the big clubs to drive the ball long, add up to a lot of upper-body work. And all that walking, and chasing balls lost in the rough, means plenty of work for your hips and spine. It is therefore obvious that golf gives weight bearing exercise a whole new name.

The Weight Bearing Exercise for Osteoporosis: Dancing

The current dances like the hottest trends in salsa, samba, Lindy hop, rhumba, East coast swing, foxtrot, and tango. They can enable your heart pumping in more ways than one, and build strong bones while you’re at it. Besides, you may want to try other activities like aerobics, kickboxing, or step class at your health club or local Y. New classes emerge every few months to keep members motivated. A lot of them now combine strength training with dance or step moves and will perk up your balance as well.

The Weight Bearing Exercise for Osteoporosis: Hiking

The work of weight-bearing and the impact as your feet hit the ground can increase bone density, especially in your hips. It’s just like walking, and then some. You’ll get even more impact on those bones if you’re going uphill or downhill, and that can improve bone health even more. More impact on your feet and legs translates into more bone density.

And with hiking, boredom is never an issue because you will be constantly meeting and socializing with new people, as well as expanding your horizons as you experience new landscapes.

The Weight Bearing Exercise for Osteoporosis: Strength Training

Lifting weights, using the weight machines at your health club, or doing calisthenics, are forms of strength or resistance training. You’re working against some form of resistance whether it’s a set of “free” weights, your own body weight, or weight machines to stress a sequence of muscles and bones. Strength training at least twice a week is needed to stimulate bone growth.

Every gym has a trainer who can design a workout for your legs, back, shoulders, and arms one that’s right for your fitness level and can rally your bone health. Finally it is always said that patient pays. The bone-building phase in young adults at its speediest takes three to four months, and it may take a lot longer if you have osteoporosis or are older. So you won’t be seeing big changes on any bone density tests after your first week of working out. Bones change slowly and this should not worry you because they do change.

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity: Diet, Nutrition and Exercise

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity is the collaboration in eliminating chronic diseases associated with weight gain and obesity

If we have to defeat the problems relating to overweight and obesity, we must do things differently. Experts all over the world are of the opinion that diet alone is not as effective in achieving a healthy body weight. That does not mean that good diet and nutrition is not effective. However combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat obesity is more efficient than each standing alone.  It can therefore be concluded that physical activities has many other health benefits as well. It is important that when making the decision to start losing weight, challenges will always be there. However you must never be discouraged because you are losing only a little weight than you had anticipated. Even relatively small weight loss can make a difference in health by reducing blood pressure and improving glucose tolerance and blood lipids. Our role as experts at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under the leadership of Doctor Akoury, who is also the founder of the facility, is to add healthy values on the lives of people. We take charge of every stumbling block to ensure that every person who is suffering from any weight related complication is treated professionally and have their lives back.

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity: Follow dietary guidelines

When we receive clients who are struggling with weight problems or just desire to keep fit, we take them through tailor made programs which will encourage them to making healthy food choices. Choices which are in line with the dietary guidelines for people with such weight related needs. The guidelines were developed by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These guidelines will actually improve your health, help you meet your nutrient requirements, and reduce your risk of chronic disease. Therefore following these guidelines will not only help you reduce or maintain your weight but also keep you healthy in all dimensions?

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity: Drink water

It is always said that water is life; this is not just a wise saying but one of the truth we can’t pretend to know of. It is no wonder health professionals all over the world commonly recommend that people should drink 8 to 10 glasses of water daily to help the body’s biological processes, especially carrying nutrients to cells and eliminating wastes.

Talking about the professionals the Institute of Medicine (IOM) advises that men should drink up to 3.7 liters (about 16 cups) of water daily while women to drink 2.7 liters (about 12 cups) of water daily. It is important to note that this recommendation is only applicable when eighty percent of this comes from pure drinking water and other beverages provided that soda, coffee and alcohol don’t form part of the other beverages. The remaining 20% should come from foods items and particularly from fruits and vegetables, which are 70% to 95% water in content.

Drinking this large unit of water may not be easy for many people. However it is worth noting that your water needs may not necessarily depend on you being thirsty but on many factors, including your health, how active you are, and where you live. Let me repeat that it’s generally not a good idea to use thirst alone as a guide for when to drink. This is so because normally by the time you become thirsty, a lot has already happen to the extent that without you knowing, you are already becoming dehydrated. It is especially important for older adults to drink water quite often before becoming thirsty, because normally our sense of thirst diminished as we become older.

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity: Pay attention to your eating patterns

The other guideline that we need to observe is paying attention to our eating patterns. Therefore what needs to concern you most is how, when, and where do you eat? Like for instance, many people across the globe will be eating simultaneously while doing something else like driving, talking on the phone, watching television, or reading. The consequence of this is that you’re likely to pay very little attention to your food which may result in the following:

  • You may not always fully taste and enjoy your food.
  • You may eat more than you need.
  • You may sometimes suffer from indigestion or other gastrointestinal symptoms.

All these may be very costly to you in the long run in the various sectors of your life and the sooner you address this, the better for you.

Combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat Obesity:  Notice the influence of the food giants

What you may not know is that most processed foods if not all of them are market oriented. They are produced with business and profit making in mind. That is why they will be rich in salt or sugar to make them more appealing for you to keep buying. In other words, they are made in a way that when you start using them, you will become addicted to them. The bottom line is that processed foods are not designed to enhance wellbeing, but to exploit natural cravings for salt, sugar, and fat and when coupled with colorful, attractive advertising, many unhealthy foods such as colas and sugary cereals become irresistible staples in most people’s diet.

Doctor Dalal Akoury recommends that grocery stores are the best places to practice your mindful shopping for good health. She says that while shopping, be mindful in checking the ingredients labels since many companies have begun to shovel harmful amounts of sugar and salt into foods you wouldn’t naturally suspect, such as spaghetti sauce, granola bars, and yogurt. Make purchase decisions based on USDA dietary guidelines: buy “whole foods,” such as fruits and vegetables, and skip processed foods, no matter how tempting and flashy their packaging may be. This is especially important if you have children, as much of the food giants’ marketing is aimed at exploiting the vulnerable willpower of young people.

Finally being active is not to be taken for granted. The little activities you do like walking or doing household duties are very healthy in keeping fit. That is why our focus was on combining healthy eating with exercise to defeat obesity. If you are still not home and dry on these processes, then you can schedule for an appointment with doctor Dalal Akoury for a one on one professional advice.
