Over the past two decades doctor Akoury has been very instrumental in offering solutions to all people across the globe and in her experience, she came a cross one client whose story will be very useful for many parents who may be going through difficult moment with their children’s addiction. According to this client about five years ago their son was 27-year-old and was so much addicted to alcohol drinking that finally led to usage of other strong drugs (cocaine to be specific). For more than one year they were in the dark about his new habit until he was out of control and that is when he lost his job this really caught us pants down because of his life and that of our grandson the client said. We could not believe how ignorant and blind we were until it all started to make sense when our son was consistently broke, weird phone calls, not showing up for family events, his actions, and his physical appearance. At this point the reality down on us and we tried to help him so desperately by enrolling him in treatment programs one after the other. It was difficult because the response was very discouraging but we kept telling him how much we loved him. In solidarity we began attending recovery meetings with him where we met other people going through the same thing.

To cut the long story short it reached a point when we realized that it was beyond our control and we were prepared for the worst but even as we were in that situation, we still told him how much we loved him even though at this time we also needed to take care of ourselves. And so very painfully we detached with love. Our house was still open for him and he would come for meals and to shower but he could not live with us any more, nor would we give him any financial assistance. As fate would have it he who was never taught by his parents would be taught by the world and so he was arrested and we did not bail him out. He was so angry with us, but we still maintained our love for him. He was sentenced to go to a treatment program. He literally had only the clothes on his back, not even a pair of shoes, and it was winter. We did not give him anything but told him to call when he was settled in his new home and that we still loved him. At this point he knew he was losing his family and possibly his son. That was about four years ago. Today our son has gone through treatment, is working on a recovery program and has custody of his son. We all take it a day at a time

From that story you will realize that as parents we really need to be on top of everything and more so when the children are still young when they are able to listen to us. It is only at this time when we still have influence over them that we can penetrate and impact on them positively about misuse of drugs. Our role as professionals from AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center is to share with you useful information about drugs and alcohol and then encourage you to choose wisely for a better life. Therefore as we progress into the discussion, if this story is communicating something in you or your family or about someone you know, do not hesitate to schedule for an appointment with doctor Dalal Akoury today for the commencement of your treatment and recovery program. In the meantime we want to share with you briefly about some tips you can use as a parent to make a difference in your children’s live

Learning children addiction from other parents: Guide lines for drug prevention applicable for parents

Without question, talking with your children is extremely important in our efforts to protect them from alcohol and drugs. But there are other things that we need to do as parents to be effectively involved in preventing alcohol and drug problems for our kids and in our families. Now the question would be “what can I do to influence or to encourage or promote prevention efforts with my children drug use?” the following are some of the guidelines parents can adopt to help their children from being addicted to alcohol and drugs:

Don’t be afraid to be the “bad” parent – Because of the love we have for our children, learning children addiction became our priority and sometimes our fear of negative reaction from our kids keeps us from doing what is right. Doctor Akoury advices that when it comes to alcohol and drugs, taking a tough stand is very necessary since it can help our children to say no to drugs because “my mom or my dad would kill me if I drank or used.” Our decisions and our rules allow our child to use us as “the reason” for not using alcohol or drugs.

Get to know who your child’s friends are – Pay attention to who your child is hanging out with, who is coming to the house and get to know them. Encourage your child’s friends to come to your home, invite them for dinner and make them feel welcomed. Encourage your child to invite friends over to the house.

Make connections with other parents too – As you get to know your kids friends, take the opportunity to introduce yourself to their parents. It’s a great way to build mutual support and share your rules about alcohol and drugs. And, it will make it easier for you to call if your son/daughter is going to a party at their house to make sure that there will be responsible parental supervision. Other guide limes may include:

  • Promote healthy activities
  • Establish clear family rules about alcohol and drugs
  • Get educated about alcohol and drugs
  • Be a role model and set a positive example
  • Keep track of your child’s activities
  • Keep track of alcohol and prescription drugs

Finally in doing all these remember in learning children addiction, walking along with experts in every step of the way is very necessary so that nothing is left to chance and doctor Dalal Akoury is only a phone call away.

Drug addiction education to children importance

Drug addiction education to children importance: The best foundation of dealing with drug addiction

drug addiction education

Drug addiction education is very essential for children as this will cause then to know about drugs. It is actually for their own good because they will flee away from trouble in future

We all would want to have our children brought in high moral standards and free from any bad influence from the environment. When our children are growing up in the acceptable ways we have impacted on them, we are happy and the whole societies will be happy too. Nonetheless one serious element that often comes in between our wishes for our children is that of alcohol and drugs. These elements are very destructive and as parents we have a duty of giving direction to our children particularly with regard to drug addiction education. This is often done each day of the child’s life (what is commonly known as parenting. Experts looking at the best possible ways of eliminating of drug addiction have established that having an open drug addiction education with the children about addiction is very important. That is why we the professionals from AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under the able leadership of doctor Dalal Akoury (MD) and also the founder of the same, we want to bring a few insight to you about why children needs to know about drugs as they grow up. We appreciate that parenting is not that easy, especially when it comes to talking to children about alcohol and drugs and because of that many parents hope to avoid the subject entirely.

But as parents are this, the best we can do? Certainly no, we are privilege to have far more influence than we think and talking honestly about alcohol and drugs to our children can have a real impact. And like I have mentioned, research has shown that kids who have conversations with their parents and learn a lot about the dangers of alcohol and drug use are up to 50% less likely to use alcohol and drugs than those who don’t have such conversations. To do this effectively, determination and willingness to succeed are very critical. Doctor Akoury agrees with many of us that it can be very challenging to develop the communication skills needed to talk with your children about drinking alcohol and drugs, but despite that it is well worth the effort you put into it, as you get to know your children a little better and help them build the coping skills they need to handle the anger, stress, peer pressure, loneliness and disappointment that are part of being an adolescent. Helping them build the skills they need to cope with these challenges is important not only in life, but in staying away from alcohol and drugs as well.

Drug addiction education to children importance: Teachable moments

The health complications that are associated with alcohol and drugs can be life threatening and therefore nobody would want his/her child to go through that experience and that is why as a parent you can be a primary source of positive and reliable information for your children. In the holy book it is written that teach a child the way he should go and when he grows up he will not depart from it, what that means is that we must chose to taking advantage of training them when they are still within reach (teachable moments) because when alcohol or drug issues come up when we cannot reach them, the damage will be very devastating. Professionally doctor Akoury advices that you can have a frank and heart to heart conversation with your children about substances when they are still young and ready to listen. Remember that it’s not about “the big talk,” it’s about being there for them when the issues come up in whichever form including the media, TV, at the movies, on the radio, news events about celebrities or sports figures, about their friends or in conversation. This is an opportunity you should not miss to teach your kids because if you do, then be rest assured that they will get their information about alcohol and drugs from friends and acquaintances, the media, the internet or other sources that not only misrepresent the potential negative impact of alcohol and drugs but, actually glorify using alcohol and drugs and that way you will lose the grip of shaping their life morally and health wise.

Why children needs to know about drugs: It’s never too young to start

Never say that your child is still very young when it comes to alcohol and drugs. Remember that children learn mostly by observation and so you must be there for them to give direction. This way you will be laying ground for eliminating alcohol and drug addiction from their lives. You must appreciate that have more influence over your kids’ attitudes and decisions about alcohol and drugs before they start using, than you will ever have afterwards. Therefore doctor Akoury advices that you should start early! Remember that children go through many different stages as they grow up and what’s appropriate to tell an 18-year-old and a 9-year-old about alcohol and drugs can vary quite a bit. Yet, it’s never too early to begin the conversation. Professionally it has been established that the more informed children are, the more these issues can be discussed soberly and effectively. Here are some basic guidelines for parents to assist you:

Listen before you talk to encourage and build on the conversation – it is true that as parents we often want to have “all the answers.” And, sometimes we are so anxious to share our wisdom or our opinion that we don’t take the time to listen. For kids, knowing that we are really listening is the most important thing we can do to help.

When talking to your child, ask open ended questions – Talk to your child regularly – about their feelings, their friends, their activities – and listen to what they have to say. As much as you can, and sometimes it’s not easy, try to avoid questions that have a simple “yes” or “no” answer.

Be involved Be involved in your child’s everyday world. Get to know your child’s friends and continue to educate your child about the importance of maintaining good health psychologically, emotionally and physically.

Set expectations limits and consequences – Make it clear that you do not want your child drinking alcohol or using drugs and that you trust them not to. Talk about possible consequences of drug and alcohol use, both legal and medical, and be clear about what you will do if the rules are broken.

Be honest and open – Care about what your child is going through as they face and make decisions that will affect their lives now and for the future.

Be positive – Many parents have discovered that drug addiction education their children has actually built bridges rather than walls between them and have proudly watched those children learn to make healthy, mature decisions on their own. Finally research have clearly documented that addiction to alcohol and other drugs is a chronic, progressive disease that can be linked to family history and genetics. It therefore means that if your family has alcohol or drugs history it will be better you seek help from the experts at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center for further direction on how to bring up your children under these circumstances.

When hope runs out of addiction recovery

When hope runs out of addiction recovery: It is still possible to start all over again

When hope runs out of addiction recovery

When hope runs out of addiction recovery other unhealthy conditions like stress get opportunity to explore on your health and this must not be allowed to happen, remember stress is one of the most triggers.

As one living with a family member who is seriously into drugs you will be down hearted seeing your loved one suffering from the scourge of addiction. It may become even more frustrating when all the efforts you have put in place to help appear not to be yielding any fruit. Therefore I want to ask you that what do you do when hope runs out of addiction recovery. With all the knowledge you have and the professional advice given duly followed yet the victim keeps to their unhealthy behavior what next? And have you ever wondered why suicide is the tragic fate of so many people struggling with addiction? In our pervious article doctor Dalal Akoury an addiction expert of many decades and also the proprietor of AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center shared with us some of the elements concerning the painful suicidal nature of drug addiction and she is going to be with us throughout this discussion helping us to appreciate some of the possible explanations which may cause one to give up on life and contemplate suicide. Such levels of giving up can only occur when hope runs out of addiction recovery and this is very dangerous. Now let us consider some of the following as the possible occurrences when the thought of suicidal creeps in:

  • When under the power and the influence of drugs or alcohol, such people are most likely to lose inhibitions and take risks they would not do when sober like committing suicide.
  • Many people abuse drugs or alcohol in an attempt to relieve the symptoms of depression, anxiety or other mental health conditions.
  • The rate of major depression is two to four times higher among addicts than the general population.

Although drugs may seem to help in the short term, they exacerbate problems over time. When attempting to stop using drugs, people may feel overwhelmed by the return of painful emotions that they had subjected to medication using drugs. They may also be clear-headed enough to carry out suicidal thoughts and plans. Transitions, such as entering or leaving treatment, relapse, and death, divorce or other major life changes, can be especially vulnerable times.

Abusing drugs, especially depressants such as alcohol or sedatives, can also trigger symptoms of depression thereby increasing the risk of suicide. As the consequences of addiction pile up, from legal problems and damaged relationships to financial ruin and job loss, individuals may lose all hope that things can get better and for some the feeling of impossibilities may take center stage where victims only see two possible ways of relief i.e. getting back into drugs use or death. When hope runs out of addiction recovery: Treatment and prevention

The best way of solving the problem of suicide that is emanating from substance abuse is to prevent it from taking place however treatment will be very fundamental if you are already deep into drugs. The figures are very disturbing if the available estimated figures are anything to go by. Doctor Akoury is reporting that about 45% of suicide patients are those suffering from untreated drug abuse disorders. This great number is due to several factors including problems like stigma. Many people often fail to seek for help because of the stigma besides luck of proper training in suicide prevention. It is important therefore that people suffering from drug addiction owns up and make clear the acknowledgement of their habit early enough so that they can enrolled in a recovery program immediate. Doing this, will go a long way in containing the situation and suicide can be prevented as a result of treatment.

There are very few primary care physicians trained to help identify and prevent suicide nonetheless the few in administering treatment must not shy away from establishing the genesis of the problem by asking turf questions that would not otherwise be asked. Such questions will be helpful is addressing suicidal ideation even when the patient is struggling or has in the past been struggling with addiction, depression or other mental health disorders. It is important that someone ask the difficult question like; whether the patient has ever considered or attempted suicide or whether they are currently think about or intend to commit suicide. These are questions that are never asked yet they are very necessary so that victims can get help in good time because patients need to be shown love and let them know that they are not alone and that they are cared for. Impacting the spirit of hope in them is very vital. And this can be a collaborative effort between them and their loved ones to help create a lasting recovery plan that guarantees their safety and then addressing the underlying issues in trust by a trusted health provider.

When hope runs out of addiction recovery: Threats

Finally we are often worried about the addicts in our lives for good reason. This is so because they are at high risk of death by a number of causes including: diseases, accident and even suicide. We have talked much about suicide now but I still want to make emphasis that suicide prevention requires a multifaceted approach even though it all hinges on the person reaching out for help and effective treatment being available when they take that brave step of turning away from their behaviors. In the meantime, let us focus our discussion to the topic of the day “understanding the effectiveness for narcotic abuse treatment” even as we progress into the discussion.

Understanding the effectiveness for narcotic abuse treatment: Intoxication

Intoxication is normally treated in cases of overdose and when severe respiratory depression occurs. Naltrexone, an opiate agonist drug, may be used to revive a person who has overdosed. It binds to opioid receptors in the brain and counteracts the effects of drugs like heroin, morphine, and codeine. Its side effects may include nausea and headache and it may be associated with liver toxicity. Like we had mentioned before, detoxification is normally the first step in treatment. Withdrawal may last from a couple of days to 2 weeks. Two drugs, methadone and clonidine, are applicable in this mode of treatment.

The primary role of methadone (a synthetic narcotic) is to reduce the discomfort of withdrawal and is normally administered in tapering doses until withdrawal ends. And because methadone is a narcotic its side effects are similar to the effects of heroin or morphine, however they have a slower onset, last longer, and are less severe. Also, respiratory depression can occur in high doses. And when it comes to clonidine which is an anti-hypertension medication, it affects the nervous system and can block the physical manifestations of withdrawal, like anxiety and irritability. Its most common side effects are dry mouth, dizziness, and drowsiness.

Understanding the effectiveness for narcotic abuse treatment: Dependence

This is very dangerous and must be overcome by abstinence. Drug counseling, self-help groups, half-way houses, and narcotics anonymous (similar to alcoholics anonymous) may instill in a user the behavioral and psychological changes necessary to break a drug habit. And remember that methadone maintenance is helpful when combined with these strategies. Tapering initially large doses of methadone can help people gradually overcome dependence. Methadone is abused and its use remains controversial. Still, long-term treatment plans (30 days to more than a year) can keep people away from street drugs, needles, and disease. They improve the quality of life for most people who attempt to recover.

Like in many parts of the world, we have over 11,000 drug treatment centers in the United States providing treatment for intoxication, withdrawal symptoms, and dependence. The objective of detoxification is abstinence. Under this arrangement staffs are trained in substance dependence, and most centers employ physicians. Therefore patients will have an option of either choosing an inpatient or an outpatient treatment program, depending on the severity of dependence, availability of facilities, insurance coverage, and other considerations. Some facilities specialize only in detoxification or long-term treatment; others provide both fast-acting devices to treat narcotic overdose

It will interest you to note that in April 2014, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved a new hand-held auto-injector to reverse a potentially fatal opioid overdose. This device which is known as Evzio (naloxone hydrochloride injection) is designed for use by family members, caregivers, and non-medical first responders in cases of known or suspected overdose of heroin or a narcotic pain reliever. And according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), Evzio will be available by prescription to friends and family members of people at increased risk for opioid overdose—those who are taking narcotic pain medications for a medical condition and those who are struggling with narcotic addiction. The easy-to-use device can be carried in a pocket, purse, or bag, or can be stored in a medicine cabinet at home. Once it is turned on, it gives verbal instructions for use and then directs the person administering the medication to call in case of emergency. A training device is included with the delivery device and family members and caregivers are instructed to become familiar with using the device before it is needed.

Understanding the effectiveness for narcotic abuse treatment: Signs of narcotic overdose

The signs may include decreased breathing/heart rate and loss of consciousness. Evzio delivers a single dose of naloxone into the muscle (intramuscular) or beneath the skin (subcutaneous) as an emergency treatment. Because the effects of narcotics can last longer than the effects of naloxone, and because naloxone can cause severe opioid withdrawal, it’s important to seek medical attention as quickly as possible. The following are some of the potential side effects of naloxone:

  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Profuse sweating
  • Cardiac arrest
  • Uncontrolled trembling/shaking
  • High blood pressure spikes
  • Increased heart rate
  • Seizures

Finally understanding the effectiveness for narcotic abuse treatment should not be taken lightly since it forms the basis of finding effective and lasting solutions to all addiction related problems globally. Therefore if you or anyone you know is struggling with any kind of addiction, you can be the bridge of hope to them by introducing them to the home of addiction experts (AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center) under the able leadership of doctor Dalal Akoury today.

The importance of detox before addiction treatment

The importance of detox before addiction treatment: The essentials in addiction recovery game plan

The importance of detox before addiction treatment

The importance of detox before addiction treatment is very crucial as it lays strong foundations for meaningful treatment and total recovery.

For anyone to be considered as an addict to alcohol or any other substance the individual must have had an accumulation of toxic elements in his or her body system. These toxic elements must be eliminated for the body to regain its optimum capacities in discharging the various need of the body. That is why it is very important that we scrutinize the importance of detox before addiction treatment is done and any benefits that can result out of it. Therefore when an individual is addicted to drugs or alcohol or even both, the body develops a physical dependence to the substance which then results into chemical changes that occur within the brain. Experts at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under the able leadership of doctor Dalal Akoury (MD) and founder of the same facility reports that, due to these physical and chemical changes that occur as a result of substance abuse, any attempts to terminate consumption by sudden or progressive quitting either through the cold turkey way or otherwise in many instances do often fails and the consequences of such failures can tantamount to significant health risks for the addict and by extension to their loved ones and the society at large. Therefore in order to eliminate or minimize the physical and psychological symptoms that can occur during the withdrawal process in a safe manner, doctor Akoury recommends that it is very important that medical detox is considered as an essential cornerstone of the recovery game plan. Professionally this service is available at the home of addiction solutions (AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center) and up on scheduling for an appointment with the experts at this facility, you will have your case evaluated professionally and the most appropriate treatment administered to you for the most desired result.

The importance of detox before addiction treatment: How medical detoxification came to the forefront

History has it that the importance of detox in regards to the recovery process from addiction came to the forefront and was first administered in the 1970’s with the emergence of the medical model. Previously and before this time (1970’s), the patterns and behaviors associated with addiction were commonly dealt with as a criminal offense and people who were struggling with such kinds of addiction were considered to be of week character a factor that was very discriminative and unfair to both the patient and their loved ones. During that time the practice was that individual addicts were often arrested and held in places like “drunk tanks” and other similar holding places of confinement where there were taken through the withdrawals without any form of medical supervision. Nonetheless and progressively as reality sunk into the society and sense of what addiction really down to the societies, they on a voluntary basis begun embracing and adopting more humane and constructive ways in dealing with individuals who were struggling with all manner of instances of substance abuse issues, and it is at this point that the methods of detoxification started to evolve and therefore we can now begin to discuss authoritatively the purpose of detox and its importance before any addiction treatment.

The importance of detox before addiction treatment: The purpose of detox and its’ importance before treatment

The importance of detox in the treatment process, as stated above, is to help rid the body of the toxins that are the result of either intoxication or dependence on a substance or substances.  Another purpose of detoxification, again as stated earlier, is to minimize both the physical and psychological symptoms associated with withdrawal. And according to the Quick Guide for Clinicians booklet created by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) regarding medical detoxification, detox in of itself is not seen as a sufficient treatment option. The main feature of detox, as noted in this guide, and its’ importance in the recovery picture is that it serves as the start of the intervention process. The detox process needs to take place in a medical facility or other licensed and accredited environment in which the detox services are performed by certified personnel. There are three main components that are very essential and entail the detoxification process. These components are available at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center and up on scheduling for your appointment with doctor Akoury, they will form the starting point of your recovery treatment process as follows:

Evaluation – consists of testing for the presence of substances in an individual’s bloodstream as well as screening for any co-occurring mental and physical conditions will be done on the patient professionally, and besides that there are also comprehensive assessments of an individual’s medical, psychological and social functioning and situations, all these are tailored at ensuring that your recovery process is procedural, timely and most importantly effective.

Stabilization – detoxification is quite a process and therefore the patient needs to be assisted through the medical, psychological and social processes of withdrawal. This is essentially tailored towards getting them to a state in which they are stable medically and free of substances.

Entry into Treatment – the moment all these are done and the doctor is certified that the patient is now ready for treatment; they are then prepared for the entry into a comprehensive treatment program.

Finally doctor Akoury reiterates that detoxification is not treatment on its own, but it is the starting point of the overall treatment and recovery process. Besides its’ stabilizing effects, it is worth appreciating that the primary importance of detox is to assess the individual across a wide spectrum of factors and establish a treatment game plan that best fits that individual. In the detoxification process, the addict is given the message that recovery from substance abuse is possible and there is hope for recovery. Starting with the detox process, those who are struggling with substance abuse understand that addiction lies within the brain and is not solely the result of weak morals on the part of the addict. Ultimately, the importance of detox is the start of being proactive in regards to treatment where family and other support networks are involved in the treatment process. This is very important and if you or any of your loved ones is struggling with any form of addiction, then you can schedule for an appointment with doctor Dalal Akoury for further professional one on one deliberations and all your concerns will be addressed timely.
