Here are some of the top preventive ways you can adopt to help prevent drug abuse:

Practical Ways of Preventing Substance Abuse: Proper management of peer pressure

Practical Ways of Preventing Substance Abuse

Practical Ways of Preventing Substance Abuse when adopted can help many young people be safe with the authorities

In many families, parents and care givers are often caught unaware of their children involvement in drugs. Many of the times we all believe that we have done a good job in bringing them up morally and with high standards of discipline only to be told that they are not what we think they are. These often happen when we are not with them. Yes we teach our children the right ways of life, but those are just our good teachings, when they are out with their friends, they are also in another environment of teaching and it is this point that things begins to go wrong. And that therefore explains that the biggest reason teens start using drugs is because their friends employ peer pressure. The sense of belonging is one big problem that is very instrumental in luring our teens into drugs even with the good teachings we impact on them. No one likes to be left out, and teens (and yes, some adults, too) find themselves doing things they normally wouldn’t do, just to fit in. Therefore we have to deal with this problem from the on start, meaning that in such cases, as a teenager you need to either find a better group of friends that won’t pressure you into doing harmful things, or better still, you need to find a good way of saying no and when you say No let that position remains no matter the pressure circumstances and push and pull. Teens should prepare a good excuse or plan ahead of time, to keep from giving into tempting situations.

We appreciate that this may not be very easy and that is why our facility is open all the time to help you cope with the pressure as and when they come. You can therefore schedule for an appointment with doctor Dalal Akoury today for the much needed professional input in whatever addictive situation you may have found yourself in due to peer pressure. It is also very important that to note that doctor Akoury is also training other professionals on matters relating to drug addiction and how to be the best in offering solutions to your patients especially those struggling with drug addiction and alcohol abuse. This coming August doctor Akoury has organized an integrative addiction conference & expo under the theme “The Future of Integrative Addiction. This conference (Integrative Addiction Conference 2015) mission is to provide prevention education, awareness, options and support to patients and physicians dealing with various forms of addiction. The conference is targeting doctors, counselors, nurses and addiction therapists and will cover will cover topics such as addiction as a holistic body ecosystem derangement, the interaction between stress, survivorship, pain and addiction, the role of hormonal imbalance in the disease of addiction, the genetic and epigenetic influences on the disease of addiction, psycho neuroendocrine immune restoration essential to reverse addiction as well as new and future therapies in the horizon for addiction treatment including stem therapy for psycho neuroendocrine immune restoration. More information on how to participate in this conference is via the event website – www.integrativeaddiction2015.com or email sharon@integrativeaddiction2015.com. This is an opportunity you don’t want to miss. Now back to the practical ways of preventing substance abuse.

Practical Ways of Preventing Substance Abuse: Dealing with life pressure

People today are overworked and overwhelmed, and often feel like a good break or a reward is deserved. But in the end, drugs only make life more stressful and many of us all too often fail to recognize this in the moment. To prevent using drugs as a reward, find other ways to handle stress and unwind. Engage in healthy activities like exercising, reading good books, volunteering with the needy, in whatever you chose to do, ensure that you only create something that will impact positively. Engaging in positive things and relaxing helps take the mind off using drugs to relieve stress.

Practical Ways of Preventing Substance Abuse: Seek help for mental illness

Mental illness and substance abuse often go hand-in-hand. Those with a mental illness may turn to drugs as a way to ease the pain. Those suffering from some form of mental illness, such as anxiety, depression or post-traumatic stress disorder should seek the help of a trained professional for treatment before it leads to substance abuse.

Practical Ways of Preventing Substance Abuse: Examine the risk factors

It is always said that knowledge is power and this must never be taken for granted. Remember that if you’re aware of the biological, environmental and physical risk factors you possess, you’re more likely to overcome them. A history of substance abuse in the family, living in a social setting that glorifies drug abuse or family life that models drug abuse can be risk factors.

Practical Ways of Preventing Substance Abuse: Keep a well-balanced life

People take up drugs when something in their life is not working, or when they’re unhappy about their lives or where their lives are going. Look at life’s big picture, and have priorities in order. And when there is any cropping problem, seek the attention of your doctor immediately, and for the professionals who would want to become the elite leaders in tomorrow’s addiction medicine, the Integrative Addiction Conference 2015 is a must attend and for more information about Integrative Addiction Treatment consult with:

Exploring Spinal Cord Injuries

The Evolving Science Of Spinal Cord Injuries

Spinal cord InjuryThe most important structure that plays the role of a link between the body and the brain is the spinal cord. It extends from the medulla oblongata of the brain through to the level of the first lumbar vertebrae. It is a cylindrical structure of nervous tissue that is composed of white and grey matter. On each of its sides, two consecutive rows of nerve roots emerge. These roots distally join forming the 31 pairs of spinal nerves. It is housed within the vertebral column. The spinal cord makes up approximately only 2% of the central nervous system but has very vital functions.

A spinal cord injury refers to any damage to any part of the spinal cord or damage of nerves at the spinal canal’s end. Below the site of the injury, there often occur permanent changes in sensation, strength and other body functions.

The subject of spinal cord injuries is not a new one. Many people are familiar with it and understand its financial implications. Many families have had to put up with hefty hospital bills after a spinal cord injury of a member. Special equipment like wheelchairs have had to be purchased to assist victims of spinal cord injury. Some victims even lose their jobs after a spinal cord injury due to inability to perform their tasks at the work place. This is a very serious financial blow to them considering the fact that they require large amounts of money to lead a normal life.

There is a complete relationship between the physical, financial, emotional and social implications of spinal cord injuries. For example when one suffers a spinal cord injury, they get paralyzed which calls for the purchase of special equipment. In some cases paralysis may lead to loss of a job. When one loses a job, they become emotionally affected and thus their social life is also greatly affected.

Spinal cord injuries are of different levels and seriousness depending on the site of injury. The vertebrae that make up the spinal column are grouped into sections. Since spinal injuries affect body functions below the site of injury, the higher the sight of injury, the more severe the dysfunction that results.

Spinal cord injury cure has been the focus of science for so long. New strategies are being developed and old strategies are being revised to make them better and improve their efficacy.

Regenerative strategies

The last two decades have witnessed tremendous efforts in attempt to enhance regeneration of spinal cord axon though many techniques. These techniques include neutralization of neurite inhibition, synthetic channel implantation, various cell transplantation and administration of neurotrophic factors. Some of these strategies have been applied to animal models and they have been so promising to the extent that their potential human application is being explored by clinicians. The main factor limiting recovery from a spinal cord injury has been attributed to the failure of the central nervous system to regenerate. All these strategies aim at making it possible for the axons in the central nervous system to regenerate. Expectations become high with the identification of growth inhibitory molecules in the central nervous system. It was thought that neutralizing these factors would allow for functional axonal regeneration in the central nervous system. But as happens to most seemingly bright researches, the dark side finally showed in this. There exist mixed results of therapeutic approaches that were based on this assumption. Neurons are suggested to differ in their regenerative abilities through similar extracellular environments by recent data. These neurons have also been shown by recent data to undergo a developmental loss of intrinsic regenerative ability. Intrinsic regenerative abilities are mediated by factors that include expression of:

  • Cytoskeletal proteins mediating the axon growth mechanics
  • Receptors for inhibitory molecules
  • Molecules in the intracellular signaling cascades mediating response to chemoattractive and chemorepulsive cues.
  • Surface molecules permitting adhesion of axon to cells in the growth path

Sharply contrasting to axon development, its regeneration involves internal protrusive forces. Micro tubules generate these forces either by transporting other skeletal elements like neurofilaments to the tip of the axon or through their own elongation. It is the complexity of the regeneration program that casts a dark shadow on the progress.

Multi- cell therapy

Spinal cord injuryTransplantation of cells replaces the damaged neural tissues and restores function after spinal cord injury. Successful results have been obtained with different cell types including adult neural stem cells, mesenchymal stem cells, fetal tissue, embryonic stem cells and myelin producing cells.

In transplants of fetal tissue combined with neurotrophic factors, axonal growth has been seen. Transplanting polymer guiding channels with Schwann’s cells also helps in achieving novel axonal growth towards a cell transplant.

It is important to note that enough immune suppression is needed lest the cell transplant will be rejected. Attention is currently focused on mesenchymal stem cells to try and circumvent this immunological rejection of transplanted cells. After transplantation, they differentiate into desired cells.

Even though multiple studies have shown success of these multi-cell strategies, it is still not clearly understood what mechanisms lead to functional improvement following transplant.

Besides that a must attend conference, drug addiction is and will never be good for any human life, in fact as we move from one generation to another, the complications of addiction also moves to greater levels. If you were to study the impact of substance abuse in the last three decades, you will come to appreciate that the complexity of addiction is also evolving with the changes we have in our day today lifestyle. This is one thing that we must by all means fight and defeat. The lives of our future generation depend heavily on the good choices we are going to make today. That is why doctor Akoury is taking very seriously the effects of alcohol addiction and all other drug related problems. In this article, we are going to look at the effects of alcohol abuse on heart diseases and stroke alongside cancer. Therefore keep reading and get the best medical information about addiction for your own health protection.

Why alcohol should be your foremost enemy: Effect on Heart Disease and Stroke

It is often said that moderate amounts (one to two drinks a day) of alcohol can improve some heart disease risk factors, such as increasing HDL (“good cholesterol”) levels. However, at this time there is no definitive scientific evidence or proof that moderate drinking improves overall health says doctor Dalal Akoury an expert of over two decades. The luck of proper authentication about this hypothesis explains why bodies like the American Heart Association have not recommended drinking alcoholic beverages solely to reduce cardiovascular risk.

Excessive drinking clearly has negative effects on heart health. Alcohol is a toxin that damages the heart muscle. In fact, heart disease is one of the leading causes of death for alcoholics. Alcohol abuse increases levels of triglycerides (unhealthy fats) and increases the risks for high blood pressure, heart failure, and stroke. In addition, the extra calories in alcohol can contribute to obesity, a major risk factor for many heart problems.

Why alcohol should be your foremost enemy: Cancer

Experts across the globe are in agreement that alcohol abuse and dependence may increase the risk for certain type of cancers. In particular, heavy alcohol use appears to increase the risks for mouth, throat, esophageal, gastrointestinal, liver, and colorectal, cancers. Even moderate drinking can increase the risk of breast cancer. Although the additional risk is small, women who are at high risk for breast cancer should consider not drinking at all. But most importantly to continually consult with their doctors for a more professional treatment approach.

Why alcohol should be your foremost enemy: Effects on the Lungs

Pneumonia – Over time, chronic alcoholism can cause severe reductions in white blood cells, which increase the risk for community acquired pneumonia (pneumonia acquired outside of hospitals or nursing homes). When patients are inebriated they are also at risk for aspiration of mucus from the airways, causing pneumonia. Patients who abuse alcoholism have a greater risk for developing severe pneumonia. Doctors recommend that patients with alcohol dependence receive an annual pneumococcal pneumonia vaccination. Therefore it is important that everybody should be well informed of the initial signs of pneumococcal pneumonia which include the following high fever, cough and stabbing chest pains. When these signs are noted then that calls for an immediate appointment with your doctor. Remember that under normal circumstances prevention is always the best but now that we have some signs treatment becomes necessary and that is why scheduling for an appointment with doctor Dalal Akoury becomes the better option and for you the professionals, attending the August Integrative Addiction Conference 2015 is a great opportunity to shine in your career, the contact details is as stipulated above.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Substance Abuse and Mental Health

Substance Abuse and Mental Health put together can really frustrate your life and immediate solution is very necessary

We are living at a time when substance abuse is becoming the order of the day and drugs are on a daily basis become very accessible to our children. The use of these drugs comes with serious health complications that destroy the very vital organs of the body including the heart, kidney, brain, lungs just to mention a few. When one abuses drugs consistently, the brain will be affected thereby causing mental health complications. The effects of substance abuse can be very frustrating if not dealt with in good time. That is why doctor Dalal Akoury founded AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center to help drug addicts get their life back professionally. We are going to be focusing on the substance abuse and mental health throughout this article so that you and your loved ones can get to know where to start from should there be an addiction and metal health problem in your family. From her over two decade of working experience doctor Akoury says that when you have both a substance abuse problem and a mental health issue such as depression, bipolar disorder, or anxiety scientifically this is called a co-occurring disorder or simply dual diagnosis as is commonly known by many. I have seen so many people struggling with various addictions but surely dealing with substance abuse, alcoholism, or drug addiction is never easy. This problem can even become more complicated and frustrating if the patient is also struggling with mental health problems. However, the good news is that when you visit our facility (AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center) we have highly trained medical staff who will administer treatments that will help you get better. She says that with proper treatment, support, and self-help strategies, you can overcome a dual diagnosis and reclaim your life. Therefore if you are struggling with any form of addiction, you may want to call doctor Akoury to schedule for an appointment for the commencement of your recovery journey.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health: Understanding the link between substance abuse and mental health

In a dual diagnosis, both the mental health issue and the drug or alcohol addiction have their own unique symptoms that may get in the way of your ability to function, handle life’s difficulties, and relate to others. To make the situation more complicated, the co-occurring disorders also affect each other and interact. When a mental health problem goes untreated, the substance abuse problem usually gets worse as well. And when alcohol or drug abuse increases, mental health problems usually increase too.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health: What comes first Substance abuse or the mental health problem?

Addiction is common in people with mental health problems. But although substance abuse and mental health disorders like depression and anxiety are closely linked, one does not directly cause the other.

Alcohol or drugs are often used to self-medicate the symptoms of depression or anxiety. Unfortunately, substance abuse causes side effects and in the long run worsens the very symptoms they initially numbed or relieved.

Alcohol and drug abuse can increase underlying risk for mental disorders. Mental disorders are caused by a complex interplay of genetics, the environment, and other outside factors. If you are at risk for a mental disorder, drug or alcohol abuse may push you over the edge.

Alcohol and drug abuse can make symptoms of a mental health problem worse. Substance abuse may sharply increase symptoms of mental illness or trigger new symptoms. Alcohol and drug abuse also interact with medications such as antidepressants, anti-anxiety pills, and mood stabilizers, making them less effective.

Substance Abuse and Mental Health: Recognizing co-occurring disorders or dual diagnosis

Doctor Akoury says that it may not be an easy task to diagnose a substance abuse problem and a co-occurring mental health disorder like depression, anxiety, or bipolar disorder. However it takes time to tease out what might be a mental disorder and what might be a drug or alcohol problem. Like it is said that the very first step of treatment of any kind of addiction is the acknowledgement of the problem, this as easy as it may be is one of the most difficult thing to most addicts. Many addicts are in denial and this is hindering treatment by greater percentage. Because of this problem it’s very difficult for addicts to admit how dependent they are on alcohol or drugs or how much the drugs affect their lives. Denial frequently occurs in mental disorders as well. The symptoms of depression or anxiety can be frightening, so you may ignore them and hope they go away. Or you may be ashamed or afraid of being viewed as weak if you admit the problem.

We appreciate that this can be very difficult for you but we want to encourage you that you are not alone and we want to help you in this journey of recovery. Many people have been there and all that you are going through they also went through but with the kind of professionalism approach we give we have heard countless testimonies of great recovery and they are now enjoying their lives free from addiction. Dr. Akoury’s practice focuses on personalized medicine through healthy lifestyle choices that deal with primary prevention and underlying causes instead of patching up symptoms. Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health: Treatment for substance abuse and mental health problems

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health are equally very important in the treatment process. Addiction can be very depressive and all treatment mechanisms must be explored.

In our previous discussions we have dealt with several means and ways of administering treatment for substance abuse and mental health problems. However, when dealing with matters of this magnitude every possibility of nailing the problem must be embraced because our objective is to eliminate the problem in it’s entirely. That is why we want to take time and discuss other treatment for drug abuse and mental health problems in this article.

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health: Group support for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders

It is always said that a problem shared is half solved. That is the principle applicable here with groupings. And just like with other addictions, groups are very helpful, not only in maintaining sobriety, but also as a safe place to get support and discuss challenges and experiences. Sometimes treatment programs for co-occurring disorders provide groups that continue to meet on an aftercare basis. Your doctor or treatment provider may also be able to refer you to a group for people with co-occurring disorders.

It is important to note that while it’s often best to join a group that addresses both substance abuse and your mental health disorder the twelve-step groups for substance abuse can also be helpful besides today such services are well spread globally making accessibility much easier. These free programs, facilitated by peers, use group support and a set of guided principles like the twelve steps to obtain and maintain sobriety. Doctor Akoury advices that even as you opt for these groups you must make sure that the group is embracing the idea of co-occurring disorders and psychiatric medication. This is very important for you because at this time all you need is a place where you will feel safe and not where you will feel pressured in any way.

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health: Self-help for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders

Getting sober is only the beginning. Your continued recovery depends on continuing mental health treatment, learning healthier coping strategies, and making better decisions when dealing with life’s challenges. And this you can achieve by adopting the following:

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health: Recognize and manage overwhelming stress and emotions

Stress management – Even though stress is inevitable in this generation, it’s very important to have healthy coping skills so that you can deal with stress without turning to alcohol or drugs. Stress management skills go a long way towards preventing relapse and keeping your symptoms at bay.

Identify your triggers and have an action plan – If you’re coping with a mental disorder as well, it’s especially important to know signs that your illness is flaring up. Common causes include stressful events, big life changes, or unhealthy sleeping or eating. At these times, having a plan in place is essential to preventing drug relapse. Who will you talk to? What do you need to do?

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health: Stay connected

Get therapy or stay involved in a support group – Your chances of staying sober improve if you are participating in a social support group like Alcoholics Anonymous or Narcotics Anonymous or if you are getting therapy.

Follow doctor’s orders – Once you are sober and you feel better, you might think you no longer need medication or treatment. But arbitrarily stopping medication or treatment is a common reason for relapse in people with co-occurring disorders. Always talk with your doctor before making any changes to your medication or treatment routine.

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health: Make healthy lifestyle changes

Practice relaxation techniques – When practiced regularly, relaxation techniques such as mindfulness meditation, progressive muscle relaxation, and deep breathing can reduce symptoms of stress, anxiety, and depression, and increase feelings of relaxation and emotional well-being.

Healthy eating habits – Start the day right with breakfast, and continue with frequent small meals throughout the day. Going too long without eating leads to low blood sugar, which can make you feel more stressed or anxious.

Exercise regularly – Exercise is a natural way to bust stress, relieve anxiety, and improve your mood and outlook. To achieve the maximum benefit, aim for at least 30 minutes of aerobic exercise on most days.

Get enough sleep – People often ignore sleeping because of the pressures of work and economic hardship however lack of sleep can exacerbate stress, anxiety, and depression it is therefore prudent that you sleep for 7 to 9 hours of quality sleep a night.

Other treatment for Drug abuse and mental health: Helping a loved one with a substance abuse and mental health problem

Helping a loved one with both a substance abuse and a mental health problem can be a roller coaster. Resistance to treatment is common and the road to recovery can be long. The best way to help someone is to accept what you can and cannot do. You cannot force someone to remain sober, nor can you make someone take their medication or keep appointments. What you can do is make positive choices for yourself, encourage your loved one to get help, and offer your support while making sure you doesn’t lose yourself in the process. You could take either of the following in helping your loved ones:

Seek support – Dealing with a loved one’s dual diagnosis of mental illness and substance abuse can be painful and isolating. Make sure you’re getting the emotional support you need to cope. Talk to someone you trust about what you’re going through. It can also help to get your own therapy or join a support group yourself.

Set boundaries – Be realistic about the amount of care you’re able to provide without feeling overwhelmed and resentful. Set limits on disruptive behaviors, and stick to them. Letting the co-occurring disorders take over your life isn’t healthy for you or your loved one.

Educate yourself – Learn all you can about your loved one’s mental health problem, as well as substance abuse treatment and recovery. The more you understand what your loved one is going through, the better able you’ll be to support recovery.

Be patient – This is very important because recovering from a dual diagnosis doesn’t happen overnight. It is an ongoing process that can take some times may be months or years, and relapse is common. Ongoing support for both you and your loved one is crucial as you work toward recovery. All these are just some guidelines to help you offer better support to your loved ones. And even as follow these guidelines it is still very important that you seek for the services of the experts in this discipline. You can reach doctor Akoury on phone today to schedule for an appointment with her and she will be of great help to you and your loved ones as well.
