Drug craving negativity and coping strategies: A cognitive behavioral approach of treating addiction

We have in the resent past been discussing serious topics touching on the cognitive behavioral approach of treating addiction and in particular cocaine addiction and techniques of coping with craving. We are not about to give it up because we understand the seriousness of the problem in our societies and even closer to our individual families. This is a war we are determined to win by all means and for that reason, we want to further into the discussion by looking at the drug craving negativity and the coping strategies we can adopt to defeat this scourge. Doctor Dalal Akoury an addiction expert of several decades has been sharing with us very healthy information about a cognitive behavioral approach of treating addiction as being one of the best strategies in finding lasting solution to cocaine addiction. She is going to progress from where we left in the previous article for us to have a better understanding of what is before us. She says that in coping with craving for cocaine or any other substance, there are several strategies for doing so and some of those strategies may include the following.

  • Distraction
  • Talking about craving
  • Going with the craving
  • Recalling the negative consequences of cocaine abuse
  • Using self-talk

We appreciate that different professionals may have different view about this like for instance some therapists may wish to point out that these strategies may not stop craving completely, however at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under the able leadership of doctor Dalal Akoury, we believe that with practice, recovering addicts will reduce the frequency and intensity of craving and make it less disturbing and frustrating when it occurs. It is therefore very prudent that we take keen interest in adopting mechanisms that will enable us to cope successfully with craving for cocaine and other drugs.

Drug craving negativity and coping strategies: Entertainment and distractions

When under the influence of drugs, all that you will be thinking about is drugs because that is what keeps you going, without it, you will actually fall sick. In that case it is only fair that you get distracted so that your mind can be engaged into other things.  Professionally doctor Akoury can now confirms that this has been tested and found to be very helpful. It is therefore very necessary that you prepare a list of reliable distracting activities and with the help of your doctor in anticipation of future craving. Such activities might include taking a walk, playing basketball, and doing relaxation exercises. Preparation of such a list may reduce the likelihood that patients will use substances, particularly alcohol and marijuana, in ill-fated attempts to deal with craving. Leaving the situation and going somewhere safe is one of the most effective ways of dealing with craving when it occurs.

Remember that drug cravings negativity are obstacles you will always meet along the way in your recovery process. How you conduct yourself under these circumstances will matter a lot in your recovery process. Successful addiction treatment mechanisms

Successful addiction treatment

Successful addiction treatment mechanisms will include assessment objectives in addiction recovery

Successful addiction treatment mechanisms: Recognition

For any meaningful treatment to yield results, the victim must first come to the point of recognizing and accepting that they have a problem which needs to be fixed. Denial is one of the greatest impediments when it comes to drug abuse treatment. Anyone in denial will not seek for help even if that help is presented to them by their concerned relatives. In many cases patients who are in denial will consent to treatment not because they have accepted but out of pressure from their loved ones

Detoxification – Treatment begins with detoxification, which is the gradual withdrawal of an abused substance under a controlled environment. In some cases a drug that is similar to the abused drug (e.g. methadone for heroin) is substituted during withdrawal to lessen the miserable symptoms and health risks associated with the withdrawal process. Depending on the drug that the person is addicted to, the withdrawal process can be handled through either an inpatient or an outpatient basis.

Rehabilitation – This is necessary to prevent the recurrence of drug abuse.  Rehabilitation involved behavioral therapies such as counseling, psychotherapy, support groups, or family therapy. Behavior therapy helps people to cope with their drug cravings and it teaches them ways to avoid drugs, prevent relapse, and what to do if a relapse occurs.  It has been established that merging a behavior therapy program with treatment medications, such as methadone, helps to suppress the withdrawal syndrome, the drug craving, and in blocking the effects of other drugs (caffeine).  Studies have shown that using methadone at adequate dosage levels in treating heroin addiction along with behavioral therapies reduces death rates and many health problems.

Abstinence – Following rehabilitation, the abuser must have a lifelong abstinence from drug abuse. Relapses from this drug abstinence may occur and lead to recurrent dependence.

Successful addiction treatment mechanisms: Treatment methods

The treatment program duration could either be short term or long term depending on the patient’s condition.

  • Short-term methods – last less than 6 months, include residential therapy, medication therapy, and drug free outpatient therapy
  • Long-term methods – may include medication therapy such as methadone maintenance outpatient treatment for opiate addicts and residential therapeutic treatment

Outpatient and Inpatient

  • Outpatient drug free treatment– does not include medication and encompasses a wide variety of programs for patients that visit a clinic at regular intervals. It actually involves individual or group counseling. Normally patients registering for this type of program do not abuse opiates, or are opiate abusers for whom maintenance therapy is needed. Generally these patients have stable lives and only brief histories of drug dependence
  • Therapeutic Communities – highly structured communities where patients stay for 6-12 months. Patients generally have long histories of drug dependence, involvement in serious criminal activities, and seriously impaired social functioning. This type of program focuses on the re-socialization of the patient to a drug free and crime free lifestyle.
  • Short-term residential programs – chemical dependency units,” based on the “Minnesota Model” of treatment for alcoholism.  Involve 3- to 6-week inpatient treatment phase followed by an extended outpatient therapy in a 12-step self-help group such as Narcotics Anonymous or Cocaine Anonymous.

Finally doctor Akoury recommends that if you are able to avoid using drugs the better. Treatment is more tasking than preventing which is the most ideal for good health. It would be the best thing you can do for yourself and to the whole society. But you are unable to all is not lost you can still get help from the experts up on scheduling for an appointment with doctor Akoury today.

Addiction stinging strains in relationships

Addiction stinging strains

Addiction stinging strains in relationships causes more damage along the way

Addiction stinging strains in relationships: The harm affects everyone

I am always very disturbed listening to people surrounding victims of addiction. Many at times drug addicts are seen as criminals and people with lose morals. This is a serious way of defeating any effort being made to kick substance abuse out of the communities. People who are struggling with any kind of addiction does not cease to be members of our families or communities because of their situation. Alcohol and drug abuse are a disease like any other and must not be seen as moral inadequacy on the part of the victim. As a matter of facts the pain that comes with addiction of a member of the family is a serious problem to the whole family unit. Doctor Dalal Akoury MD and founder of AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center reiterates that people may ignore but addiction stinging strains in relationship is very costly.

Addiction stinging strains in relationships: Being poor role model

Take for example just to explain how this is a family problem. When you being the head of the family is smoking cigarette, your children who are very good student of observation are learning from you. And to them what daddy does is always the correct thing. If these children were to be told otherwise, they are likely to ignore the voice of truth and stick to the observation they have made from their father who is their most immediate teacher, protector and role model. Look at that are you still considering your position of this being the problem of the direct victim alone and not of the whole unit of family? The problem here is that children brought out in such kind of environment are serious candidates of addiction to all the substances they may have seen being abused by their parents. And when they start using the same substances, their parents may not have the oral authority of stopping them. At this point it leaves the corridors of the family and escalates to the society.

Addiction stinging strains in relationships: Finding lasting solution to all kinds of addictions

Even as we turn our focus to finding solutions, it is important to note that the addiction stinging strains in relationships can impact on your health too. With the family straining and relationships falling apart, people are likely to become anxious, mistrustful and tired. Besides that an overwhelming sense of hopelessness can set in too and because addiction hurts the whole family, it is therefore very essential that solutions are tailored to restoring the whole family which therefore means that even as we seek for professional solutions, recovery process from addiction will greatly depend on the commitment and willingness of the family.

That is true but professionally on our part under the leadership of doctor Akoury who made a passionate decision of creating a medical center whose main objective is to transform each individual’s life through increasing awareness about health and wellness and by empowering individuals to find their own inner healing power. Psycho education components in addiction treatment

Psycho education also referred to as psycho educational instruction is a process of imparting knowledge about diseases, therapies, medications, communication styles, and related issues through participative lecture. This is very interesting and actually in line with the decision doctor Akoury made years ago. In her desire to help more effectively, doctor Akoury established a health facility (AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center) whose main objective is to transform each individual’s life through increasing awareness about health and wellness and by empowering individuals to find their own inner healing power. This has been one of the leading facility in dealing with all addiction health related complications. Besides the formation of this facility, it will further interest you to appreciate that doctor Akoury’s practice focuses on personalized medicine through healthy lifestyle choices that deal with primary prevention and underlying causes instead of patching up symptoms. This is therefore the place to be for all your addiction problems. You may therefore want to start your journey of recovery by calling us on telephone number 843 213 1480 and we will certainly make a difference in your life and that of your family.

Teaching of patients and their loved ones

Simply put, the psycho educational component of residential treatment at AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center under the able leadership of doctor Dalal Akoury, MD, this actually involves teaching patients and including family members about the nature of the issues and disorders with which they or their loved one is struggling with. And by the way, have you ever heard the common phrase that knowledge is power?

At AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center, we have a deep appreciation for the power of education. In the broader sense, a commitment to lifelong learning is key to continued growth and development and in the specific case of residential treatment, education is a means of gaining a greater understanding of oneself and one’s challenges and regaining control over one’s life.

Psycho education is consistent with the disease model of addiction and addiction treatment. For example, a patient with diabetes may need insulin to stay alive but that patient also needs to understand the nature of his/her disease in order to effectively manage the disease and live a healthy life. The same is true of all patients no matter you location so long as you are struggling with addiction, a mood disorder, an eating disorder, or a behavior compulsion.

Psycho educational experiences

The following are examples of common psycho educational experiences during residential treatment:

  • Education is Empowerment
  • Learning about the disease model of education which leads to understanding that addiction is not a “moral failure” or a “lack of character,” but rather health real condition that requires professional treatment.
  • Learning about the nature of relapse and how to recognize potential triggers that can lead to relapse.
  • Learning about the ways that addiction and related disorders impact and are impacted by family and other loved ones.

Finally it may interest you to appreciate that, psycho education exists in conjunction with all treatment programs. Educated patients are empowered patients and empowered patients are best prepared for a successful pursuit of long-term recovery.
