Stem Cell and Hair Loss

Stem Cell Treatment for Hair Loss

Hair lossStem cells are very special, powerful cells found in both humans and also in other animals. They have been called the center pieces of regenerative medicine. Medicine that involves growing new cells, tissues and organs to replace or repair those damaged by injury, disease or aging.

Stem cells are the precursors of all cells in the human body. What makes stem cells special is that they are regenerative and malleable. They have the ability to replicate themselves and to repair and replace other tissues in the human body. Some tissues, like skin, need constant renewal, which could not take place without skin stem cells. Other stem cells repair damage to the body’s tissues, for example, rebuilding damaged or degenerating muscle tissue. New research also indicates that stem cell malfunction or damage may be responsible for certain cancers and even muscular-degeneration diseases like Muscular Dystrophy. Research on stem cell functioning is therefore a critical avenue to finding treatments for these and other diseases.

Stem cells differ from other kinds of cells in the body. All stem cells have three general features that make them different from other body cells. These features are: they are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods. They are unspecialized and they can give rise to specialized cell types. Stem cells are capable of dividing and renewing themselves for long periods. Unlike muscle cells, blood cells, or nerve cells which do not normally replicate themselves, stem cells may replicate many times, or proliferate

Stem cell therapy is a strategy that is used in treating disease by introducing adult stem cells into damaged tissues in order to treat the disease, correct the damage and restore the functions of the tissues. There is optimism in medical research fields that the stem cells have the potential to change the face of human disease and alleviate suffering. The ability of stem cells to self-renew and give rise to subsequent generations with variable degrees of differentiation capacities, offers significant potential for generation of tissues that can potentially replace diseases and damaged areas in the body, with minimal risk of rejection and side effects.

Stem cells are known in two brad categories namely the embryonic stem cells, which are isolated from the inner cell mass of blastocyst and the mesenchymal stem cells. Stem cells are found in three main points in the human body; the bone marrow, adipose tissues and from placenta after a successful birth.

Researchers Propose stem cell therapy as good treatment for hair loss

There is a group of researchers from California who have linked stem cell therapy to treatment of hair loss. The scientists, working at the Sanford-Burnham Medical Research Institute in La Jolla, Calif. have shown that that stem cells derived from human skin can be used to grow hair. This group did these tests on in mice.

“The method is a marked improvement over current methods that rely on transplanting existing hair follicles from one part of the head to another,” Said, Dr. Alexey Terskikh who is an associate professor at the institute. He is also a member of the team of researchers who demonstrated the experimental technique, said in a written statement. “Our stem cell method provides an unlimited source of cells from the patient for transplantation and isn’t limited by the availability of existing hair follicles.”

This research having shown the possibility of utilizing stem cells to help in regrowing hair is now seen as a better alternative to conventional hair transplantation and other hair restoration treatments as it is able to grow hair on people’s heads that were initially bald, plus it is not limited by the availability of hair follicles.

This is a Breakthrough

Hair LossThe potential of stem cells in treating variety of diseases can never be underestimated as they have the ability to form different types of cells and healing damaged cells. However for this research it has only been tested on mice but there is greater probability that it can go through in treating humans.

“If this approach is proven to work in humans, it will change existing treatments radically,” Dr. Nicole Rogers, a dermatologist and hair transplant surgeon in New Orleans, told The Huffington Post in an email.

Another dermatologist, Dr. Marie Jhin who works in San Francisco and an adjunct clinical instructor at Stanford University, echoed that assessment. If the treatment pans out, she told Huffington Post Science in an email, it “absolutely would be a breakthrough.”

However, DR. Rogers said that the Sanford-Burnham researchers should replicate their research in large scale and test the outcome in order to reinforce these findings. They also need to do human tests.

This treatment is capitalizing on the ability of the stem cells to turn in any other cells of the body. In this study Terskikh and his collaborators turned the stem cells into the dermal papilla cells that regulate the formation and growth of hair follicles, and showed that the stem cells helped grow hair when injected into mice. According to these researchers, Human dermal papilla cells are unsuitable for conventional hair transplants because they cannot be obtained in necessary numbers and they quickly lose their hair-growing potency, according to the statement.

Finally, Beauty plays a great role not only in boosting our looks but also in giving us the feeling of self-worth. Loss of hair due to diseases or baldness should not rob you of your beauty. Dr. Dalal Akoury (MD), founder of the AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center Located at Myrtle Beach, North Caroline has unequalled experienced in handling these issues, call on her for help.

Estrogen Dominance and Hormonal Imbalances

Estrogen Dominance and Hormonal Imbalances

Estrogen dominance describes a state in which a woman can have insufficient, normal or too much estrogen, but has little or no progesterone to match or balance its effects in the body.

Hormones are very important in the normal body functioning. When the hormones are not working as they should then a hormonal imbalance occurs. Hormonal imbalance is very common especially among women and it’s the leading causes of weight loss difficulties. Hormonal imbalance also increases obesity risks in females especially.

Women more than men, are likely to experience an imbalance in their hormones. In women menopause is the leading causes of hormonal imbalances. However, contrary to popular belief, there are other factors that may throw your hormones off balance. Such include things like medication, lifestyle as well as pregnancy. Stress also among the causes of hormonal imbalances in both men and women.

Underneath this hormonal imbalances are healthy problems that occur as a result. Such imbalances lead to things like moods swings, hot flashes, depression, weight gain, heavy breeding, migraines, and fibroids among others. Weight loss is very difficult when your hormones are not balanced for example, estrogen.

estrogen-dominance

Estrogen Balance

It is an important factor while trying to maintain weight as well also in losing some. It is often associated with belly fat when its levels are not balanced. Estrogen imbalance is common in men and women who are experiencing premenopause. It leads to bloating, water retention, fat gain and other health issues. In women, age and stress lead to the progesterone and testosterone levels decline and this leaves the body with too much estrogen.

Women and men who have an excess of estrogen hormone end up gaining weight with the concentration being around the abdomen and hip. This is generally what leads to belly fat. When the levels of estrogen are not restored back to normal, weight loss is very difficult no matter how much effort you put into it.

You have probably come across people who no matter how much of good diet and exercise they take they just can’t seem to shed off those extra pounds.  This can be a real issue and it ends up affecting the quality of your life. Just like poor diet and lack of enough exercises, high levels of estrogen in the body are a risk factor of obesity. It is common knowledge that obesity leads to health conditions such as heart attack and high blood pressure.

Estrogen Dominance

Estrogen dominance is a sad state for a woman to find herself medically speaking. When estrogen is in excess in the body it will in most cases lead to considerable weight gain. So what brings about excess estrogen in the body? Most often excess estrogen will often arise when the body produces too much of it, when levels of other hormones such as progesterone and testosterone reduce and also through our diets and lifestyles.

Most of the foods we eat contain compounds such as herbicides and pesticides which are toxic and contain growth hormones. Such compounds take the nature of estrogen and when ingested into the body, the result is an increased level of the hormone creating an offset in the balance that normally exists. Most of these toxics have been shown to lead weight gain and promote estrogen dominance to a certain degree.

Age and stress are also factors that lead to an increase in the levels of hormone estrogen. What happens is that as we age especially women the level of other hormones like progesterone decreases but the levels of estrogen do not decline. This leads to an increased level of the estrogen dominance which leads to an imbalance that translates into health issues like obesity. As you gain weight, insulin resistance occurs whereby the body resists the insulin that is produced by the body. Thereby, with insulin resistance, the risk of estrogen dominance increases.

How to Correct Hormonal Imbalance

As seen, hormonal imbalance is often caused by medications, toxics, poor eating habits and lifestyle choices. So how do we correct this hormonal imbalance?

Avoid Toxics: compounds such as pesticides and herbicides contain toxics and growth hormones. These mess up the hormonal balance that usually exists leading to an increase in the levels of estrogen hormone in the body. To avoid this, always wash vegetables and fruits well before consumption.

Change your lifestyle: almost every medical expert will tell you that the lifestyle you lead may either improve or destroy your health. Change your eating habits by starting to take a well-balanced diet. Also find time to regularly exercise because, weigh gain is a risk factor for estrogen dominance.

Supplements: there are hormone supplements that contain hormones that are meant to restore the balance again. Visit your doctor for more information on the kind of hormones you should take.

Avoid stress:  sometimes you may find yourself going through a stressful situation. Always try to avoid such situations by focusing on the positive side of life. Stress is a factor that can wreak havoc to your hormones throwing them completely out of balance.

Chronic Fatigue and Mitochondrial Imbalances

Chronic Fatigue and Mitochondrial Imbalances

Chronic fatigue is a condition that affects 2.6% of the American population. It involves fatigue that tends to affect more than one part in the body and is worsened by mental or physical activity. Many people believe that chronic fatigue can be treated by bed rest but this is not the case. As you put yourself through physical and mental stress, fatigue becomes more severe leading to a condition known as chronic fatigue syndrome.

There has not been an official explanation as to what causes the disease. However several theories revolve around it which tends to explain its causes. Such include toxics, mitochondrial dysfunction, stress, hormonal imbalances, pathogens, allergens and many more.

Chronic fatigue not only affects your health but also the quality of your life. It can be a real issue to deal with when you find out that you are unable to carry out your duties because you feel tired all the time. Chronic fatigue can thereby be a risk factor for obesity. Since fatigue comes about because your body does not produce the necessary energy for normal body functions like breathing and blood circulation, you are unable to exercise.

Now we all understand that exercise is necessary for normal body functioning and general wellness. When we do not exercise, we are likely to start gaining weight a risk factor of obesity and other chronic illnesses. This is what chronic fatigue does. It renders you inactive and most of your time is spent in bed rest because you don’t have any energy to do anything not to talk about the muscle pains experienced.

Symptoms of chronic fatigue include depression, muscle aches and tenderness, anxiety, impaired mental ability, insomnia and general body weakness. Mitochondrial imbalances are among the factors that can cause chronic fatigue syndrome.

Chronic Fatigue

What are mitochondria?

To understand how chronic fatigue comes about, there is need to understand mitochondria and the role they play in the production of energy. Each and every cell in our body has mitochondria components that play the role of converting nutrients into energy. The foods we take consist of different nutrients which must be broken down to produce energy.

The mitochondria are present in each cell and they are responsible for giving cells the energy they require to carry out their functions. They supply the cells with energy in form of ATP. When the mitochondria are not functioning, this means that the cells are deprived of energy. Due to lack of ATP the cells are not able to function with the same speed they are used to. This translates then to slowing down of normal body functions.

Mitochondrial Imbalances

Since cells require ATP to function normally any factor that interferes with this process leads to fatigue of the body organs and muscle pains. When the mitochondria are not functioning properly the body ends up relying on anaerobic respiration in order to produce energy. This kind of respiration mostly causes fatigue, decline in concentration ability, muscle pains, gastrointestinal dysfunction, headaches and inability to recover energy lost during exercises.

Studies show that mitochondrial dysfunction is responsible for chronic fatigue syndrome as well as fibromyalgia. Studies have shown that this dysfunction is present in the leukocytes of patients suffering from chronic fatigue which explains the muscle aches experienced by such patients. The damage of the mitochondria can either be genetic or as a result of environmental changes. Studies show that mitochondrial dysfunction can be as a result of medications which inhibit the normal functioning of mitochondria, oxidation stress, toxic compounds, lack of enough nutrients and inheritance of genes that interfere with mitochondrial functioning.

Chronic_fatigue

Al these factors affect the ability of the mitochondria to produce ATP required by the cells. This then leads to a number of health problems such as chronic fatigue. Mitochondrial dysfunction not only leads to chronic fatigue but can cause tissue damage. A tissue is a mass of cell. When cells do not get the energy they require to function, the whole tissue can end up being destroyed and finally leading to organ dysfunction. This results in health disorders such as cardiovascular, metabolic, neurologic and immunologic problems.

The mitochondria are necessary for normal cellular activities. Basically our health depends highly on our diet and lifestyle. Adjusting these may prove a helpful way of treating mitochondrial dysfunction. Weight Gain From Poor Digestion And Mal-absorption

Weight Gain: A Symptom of Poor Digestion and Mal-Absorption

When you start adding extra pounds, there are several things that come to your mind. Besides thinking about what could be causing the sudden weight gain, you will also be wondering about ways to facilitate weight loss. The first thing that comes to our mind when faced with this situation is that our diet is the source of the extra ponds.

We therefore cut out foods we suspect could be causing the weight gain. Most of the time these foods include; sugars, carbohydrates and fats. To most of us these are the main causatives of weight gain.

In cutting out these foods, we deprive our body of essential nutrients that can only come from such foods.

However there are other factors that cause weight gain. Lack of exercise is one of them. When you eat without exercising, then you will certainly add weight.

Some health conditions such as allergies, bacteria over growth, yeast infections, thyroid disease and insulin resistance among others can also cause weight gain. Mal-absorption and poor digestion can as well contribute to weight gain.

fat-malabsorption

Absorption disorders

They are also referred to as mal-absorption syndromes. It occurs when food is not properly digested and nutrients from the diet are not absorbed into the blood stream as they should. These nutrients include among others, minerals, proteins, vitamins, fats and carbohydrates in form of starch and sugars.

Mal-absorption syndrome is not in particular a disease but it results from other health conditions. Digestion involves the breakdown of food so that it can be in a form that can easily be absorbed into the blood for the overall wellness of the body. It takes place in the gastrointestinal tract.

During the break down of food, the nutrients are absorbed in the small bowel. The mucosa, which is the small intestine lining, facilitates absorption of nutrients due to the villi and micro villi that provide a large surface area for this absorption. There are also specialized cells that are used to enhance this absorption of nutrients.

Mal-Absorption and Digestive Disorders and Weight Gain

It is common knowledge that if you want to lose weight, then you have to burn more calories than what you take in your diet. One of the main reasons why weight gain is common among a number of folks is the fact that people eat a lot and refuse to exercise. Your diet contributes to most of the weight you add. Following that up with exercises will ensure that the more calories you eat the more are lost. Due to this, adding weight will not be a part of you.

As seen however, conditions such as poor digestion and mal-absorption can lead to weight gain. How does this happen?

Poor digestion means that food is not being digested properly. This is followed by poor absorption of nutrients from the food into the blood.

Body wellness depends on the general condition of the body. Nutrients are essential for the health of a person. You have heard that lack of nutrients can lead to weight gain. What most people believe is that lack of nutrients will make you thin. This is not the case.

Nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, fats and vitamins are necessary in the body. If there is poor absorption of these nutrients, they end up accumulating in the body and this causes you to gain weight.

Carbohydrates in particular are converted into fats which are deposited in the tissues. When combined with fats in the body, they end up causing immense weight gain. So as you see, mal-absorption will not necessarily make you lose weight.

weight gain

Poor Digestion and Mal-Absorption Natural Treatment for Weight Loss

When food is not properly being digested, it means that it will not be broken down into essential nutrients. This means that the body will not get the necessary nutrients form the diet. This results in weight gain.

In the same way mal-absorption disorders results in malnutrition and the result is weight gain. So how do you manage this?

The best way to induce weight loss is to do lots and lots of exercise. Don’t just eat. Eat and engage in plenty of exercises.

Also reduce your intake of carbohydrates and fats. Normally carbohydrates are broken down into sugars. When there is poor digestion and absorption, carbohydrates are converted into fats and these are deposited in the body. This leads to weight gain. So therefore why don’t you reduce the amount of carbs and fats you take into the diet?

Estrogen and Male Libido

Estrogen and Male Libido explains the Effects of Estrogen on the Penis

estrogenHormones play an important role in a person. These are the body’s chemical messengers that enable the body to accomplish certain functions. There are hormones that are mostly functional in the females, likewise there are hormones that are for males. These hormones are responsible for features in both men and women. The hormones that give women their feminine characteristics are estrogen and progesterone they are produced in the ovaries of these ladies up to a certain time that they reach menopause a period at which the production of these hormones at the ovary stops. These are responsible for breast enlargement, decreases the muscle mass and heightens the voice of women. It is the hormone that also keeps women sexually active without this hormone women suffer many sexually related problems such as lack of sex drive, inability to get aroused for sex and possibly it may affect their climax during sex- there might be absence of orgasm. To help women who have reached menopause but still wish to enjoy sex there is a hormone therapy through which their bodies can be supplemented with this hormone to enable them resume their sexual vigor. On the other hand the male hormones known as androgens also give men their sexual characteristics. They are what differentiates men from women, the most active male hormone is the testosterone and it does such functions as deepening the voice, increasing the muscle mass, enables growth of hair in pubic area as well as the facial hair, enhances sex drive, stimulates the growth of the penis and testicles in children.

Generally, men have more testosterone hormones than women and women also have more estrogen than men. It is however good to note that even men have estrogen in low levels and they help accomplish such functions as regulating certain functions of the reproductive system important to the maturation of sperm,  However estrogen dominance in men can cause myriad problems ranging from erectile dysfunction to prostate cancer, Estrogen and Male Libido is of great significance. When estrogen dominates in men the men will have female features such as enlarged breasts, heightened voice, reduction in trunk and body hair, presence of vellus hair (this is the type of hair that grows in women) and loss of masculinity. Generally if a man happens to have more of estrogen hormones than necessary he will exhibit feminine characteristics; of course Estrogen and Male Libido cannot be underestimated. There is a major problem when the estrogen increases while the testosterone decreases that is quite a bad combination for men as it will not only affect their appearance but also affects their moods and sexual functions. Remember that estrogen and male libido is a problem that should be early diagnosed and treated.

Estrogen and Male libido often explains the effects of Estrogen on the Penis and Testicles

Contrary to what many people think, estrogen dominance in men do not cause any change in the size of the penis it only makes it flaccid. The penis will seem to be small since with the presence of the estrogen hormone the lower abdominal fats will be increased which makes the penis seem smaller; Hence Estrogen and Male could be of great magnitude. When there is too much estrogen in the body of a man it becomes less likely for him to get a spontaneous erection. These hormones will also lead to reduction in the size of the testacles.

Estrogen and Male libido often explains Why obese men are at risk

Estrogen and male libido

Estrogen and male libido

Obesity is synonymous to high levels of estrogen. When a man is overweight is a good ground for estrogen dominance as fats increases estrogen production. It is therefore wise to maintain an ideal weight lest you expose yourself to sexual problems as well as other types of cancers that are induced by high levels of estrogen. This is a simple but dangerous cycle; obesity stimulates estrogen production, and high estrogen production stimulates weight gain. This cycle can be broken by weight loss which in turn will lead to decreased levels of the estrogen hormone in the body.

The levels of estrogen normally increase in men as they age. And it is quite unfortunate that as the levels of estrogen increases it attracts the opposite reaction in testosterone hormones and they will decrease leading estrogen dominance. This however is natural and happens to all men but in case of obesity the increase in estrogen can happen to even those who are still young (are below 60 years of age) meaning their sexual activity will be maimed at that early age as a result of obesity induced increment in estrogen levels. Even if the aged are obese it becomes a double tragedy, they will experience estrogen increment as a result of old age as well as increase estrogen levels through obesity.

Xenoestrogens; the Synthetic Estrogen and male Libido.

Xenoestrogens are manmade or other artificial hormones. When they get in our bodies they mimic the activities of the estrogen hormones in our bodies. They are also referred to as estrogen mimics. We get this hormone in commercial dairy products that are from animals injected with growth hormones and it acts as estrogen in our bodies. It is also available in pesticides used to spray crops and unfortunately they end up in our bodies. When introduced in the body they inhabit fatty tissues like the breast tissues and hence favor growth of cancerous cells in the breast. This hormone is more poisonous than natural ‘estrogen dominance’ and it also poisons the DNA, unfortunately xenoestrogen cannot be easily removed from the body. When Estrogen and Male Libido affect you personally Dr. Dalal Akoury offers you many tips to reduce your estrogen levels, among other ways, you can avoid Xenoestrogens by using chlorine free products as well as eating organic foods that are free from pesticides, herbicides and fungicides that hosts Xenoestrogens.
