Multiple health risks from cancer: Stress driving force of cancer

If you ever want to experience the undisputed multiple health risks wait until you’re diagnosed with cancer. This diagnosis will associate well with stress which is a stimulant of health complications. Cancer and stress put together in one’s life, there will be total ruins and to understand this better, we spoke to doctor Dalal Akoury MD President and founder of AWAREmed Health and Wellness Resource Center. For over two decades, doctor Akoury has impacted positively in many people’s lives and concerning this discussion, three questions needs to be addressed as follows.

Multiple health risks from cancer: How does stress affect the way cancer progress?

How does your body respond to stress? When one is stressed up, the body will produce stress hormones to deal with it. And for cancer patients, when this happens, these hormones bind with cancer cells. That can make the cells more invasive and help protect them as they move from one part of the body to another. The danger of this is that the tumor grows thereby facilitating the spread of cancer and also triggers the reduction of your immune system strength.

How can I protect myself against the effects of stress?

People with better support tend to have better functioning immune systems. They also tend to have lower levels of certain stress hormones. This makes it less likely that stress will cause changes in the way a tumor grows.

Multiple health risks from cancer: How does support work?

Support makes it easier to develop qualities you need to deal with stress. For example, it can help you develop more active coping skills. A strong support network can reduce the effects of stress in several ways including the following:

  • It can lessen the magnitude of the problem and help you see that event as less stressful. That will lessen your body’s response to it.
  • It can improve your management levels and how you cope by providing advice, problem solving techniques and resources for help when you need it.
  • It can help enhance positive health behaviors such as exercise and proper nutrition.
  • It can provide support that makes it easier to adhere to your medical treatment plan.

A number of recent studies have also shown that, in addition to a support network, there are potential benefits from programs that help you learn how to manage stress. Such programs include:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy
  • Mindfulness
  • Yoga
  • Alternative therapies such as Healing Touch
  • Medication

Finally, it is important to appreciate that such programs can not only help you in dealing with the stress that comes from having cancer and associate multiple heath risks, but stress can also come from treatments such as chemotherapy and radiation. That means, cancer and stress must not be allowed to ruin your health. There is always something you can do to be safe. Cancer disease fundamentals and alcohol consumption

Cancer disease fundamentals

Cancer disease fundamentals and alcohol consumption registers double health complications from cancer and stress.

Cancer disease fundamentals and alcohol consumption: Can a person’s gene contribute to their risk of alcohol related cancer?

The answer to this question is yes. It is actually true that a person’s risk of alcohol-related cancers can be influenced by their genes, and specifically when the genes that encode the enzymes is involved in metabolizing that is breaking down of alcohol. For example, one way the body metabolizes alcohol is through the activity of an enzyme called alcohol dehydrogenase, or ADH. Many individuals of Chinese, Korean, and especially Japanese descent carry a version of the gene for ADH that codes for a “super-active” form of the enzyme. This super-active ADH enzyme speeds the conversion of alcohol (ethanol) to toxic acetaldehyde. As a result, when people who have the super-active enzyme drink alcohol, acetaldehyde builds up. Among people of Japanese descent, those who have this super-active ADH have a higher risk of pancreatic cancer than those with the more common form of ADH.

Can red wine help in cancer prevention?

Researchers conducting studies using purified proteins, human cells, and laboratory animals have found that certain substances in red wine, such as resveratrol, have anticancer properties. Grapes, raspberries, peanuts, and some other plants also contain resveratrol. However, clinical trials in humans have not provided evidence that resveratrol is effective in preventing or treating cancer. Few epidemiologic studies have looked specifically at the association between red wine consumption and cancer risk in humans.

Cancer disease fundamentals and alcohol consumption: What next after quitting alcohol abuse?

Most of the studies that have examined whether cancer risk declines after a person stops drinking alcohol have focused on head and neck cancers and on esophageal cancer. In general, these studies have found that stopping alcohol consumption is not associated with immediate reductions in cancer risk; instead, it may take years for the risks of cancer to return to those of never drinkers.

For example, a pooled analysis of 13 case-control studies of cancer of the oral cavity and pharynx combined found that alcohol-associated cancer risk did not begin to decrease until at least 10 years after stopping alcohol drinking. Even 16 years after they stopped drinking alcohol, the risk of cancer was still higher for ex-drinkers than for never drinkers.

In several studies, the risk of esophageal cancer was also found to decrease slowly with increasing time since stopping alcohol drinking. A pooled analysis of five case–control studies found that the risk of esophageal cancer did not approach that of never drinkers for at least 15 years after stopping alcohol drinking.

Is it safe for someone to drink alcohol while undergoing cancer chemotherapy?

Cancer is a killer disease and alcohol is equally very bad for your health even if you were not struggling with cancer. What benefit can one get from alcohol especially when you are also on cancer treatment? Certainly nothing good will come out of it. However if you are so much into alcohol and you feel like you cannot get along without drinking, then you must and timely consult with your doctor. Your doctor who has been administering treatment on you will able to advice you professionally on specific issues including whether drinking whether drinking alcohol is safe with particular chemotherapy drugs or other medications prescribed along with chemotherapy. Nonetheless you can also seek for professional help from other medical experts like doctor Dalal Akoury, all you need to do is to call her for an appointment and she will gladly give you her best from her experience of over two decades of practice.

Comprehensive cancer disease impacts on obese patient: The risk of cancer patients being obese

Obesity is a condition where an individual person or persons has an abnormal high and unhealthy proportion of body fat. The measurement of obesity is often done using the BMI scale. This is believed to provide a more reliable and accurate measure of obesity or overweight as oppose to the use of weight alone. Now of what interest do we have in the ascertainment of peoples’ weight? This is because the prevalence of obesity and overweight is growing into a catastrophic situation and people’s health is at risk. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is giving an estimation of about 68% in US alone as the adult population age 20 and above to be struggling with either obesity or overweight. With this impact and the complications that come with being obese or overweight, it has become necessary that both the professionals and the laymen take a position in fighting the scourge. With the help of experts from AWAREMED Health and Wellness Resource Center under the leadership of doctor Dalal Akoury MD, we want to understand how the comprehensive cancer disease impacts on obese people with a view of creating awareness to the society to be on the look out of the consequences that are attached to these two conditions.

Comprehensive cancer disease impacts on obese patient: Various types of cancer associated with being obese

Experts have established that obesity is closely associated with increased risks of various types of cancer including the following among many others:

  • Esophagus
  • Pancreas
  • Colon and rectum
  • Breast (after menopause)
  • Endometrium (lining of the uterus)
  • Kidney
  • Thyroid
  • Gallbladder

Speaking to doctor Dalal Akoury about these disturbing facts she adds that several possible mechanisms have been suggested in the past to explain the association of obesity with increased risk of certain cancers making reference to the following suggestions:

  • Fat tissue produces excess amounts of estrogen, high levels of which have been associated with the risk of breast, endometrial, and some other cancers.
  • Obese people often have increased levels of insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) in their blood (a condition known as hyperinsulinemia or insulin resistance), which may promote the development of certain tumors.
  • Fat cells produce hormones, called adipokines that may stimulate or inhibit cell growth. For example, leptin, which is more abundant in obese people, seems to promote cell proliferation, whereas adiponectin, which is less abundant in obese people, may have anti-proliferative effects.
  • Fat cells may also have direct and indirect effects on other tumor growth regulators, including mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) and AMP-activated protein kinase.
  • Obese people often have chronic low-level, or “sub-acute,” inflammation, which has been associated with increased cancer risk.

Other possible mechanisms include altered immune responses, effects on the nuclear factor kappa beta system, and oxidative stress. With that it becomes clear that obesity can really complicate what is already complicating your health. We can be safe from this problem by choosing to live a healthy lifestyle all round. Doctor Akoury can be of great help to you in all matters pertaining weight management if only you can schedule for an appointment with her today.

Acupuncture

During acupuncture treatment, a practitioner inserts tiny needles into your skin at precise points. Studies show acupuncture may be helpful in relieving nausea caused by chemotherapy. Acupuncture may also help relieve certain types of pain in people with cancer. The safety of this treatment procedure is guaranteed but it must only be done by an experienced and licensed practitioner using sterile needles. No mistakes must be done and therefore if you are not certain of whom to turn to for the performance of acupuncture, then you can consult with your doctor for names of trusted practitioners. Doctor Dalal Akoury says that acupuncture is beneficial but it must never be used on patients who are taking blood thinners or those who have low blood counts. Such patients must first consult with medical professionals before acupuncture is performed on them.

Aromatherapy uses fragrant oils to provide a calming sensation. Oils, infused with scents such as lavender, can be applied to your skin during a massage, or the oils can be added to bath water. Fragrant oils can also be heated to release their scents into the air. Aromatherapy may be helpful in relieving nausea, pain and stress.

Aromatherapy can be performed by a practitioner, or you can use aromatherapy on your own. Aromatherapy is safe, though oils applied to your skin can cause allergic reactions.
